Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

From Haringey Community Voice:

For 20 months, an elderly woman was left effectively housebound in a property that failed to meet her basic needs. Unable to use her own bath and trapped by stairs she could not navigate without help, she told the Ombudsman she felt like "a prisoner in her own home".

Coming just after the 1,100 unread social work emails and the borough having the most upheld complaints by the Local Government Ombudsman of any council in the country, it makes you wonder if councillors are able to hold officers to account and change what seems a pervasive culture of apathy.

THE apparently "pervasive culture of apathy" does not extend to the Borough of Culture 2027 programme, where there is genuine focus. And increasing activity, attention, resources and excitement among the top brass. I just hope the distraction-factor is not too great.

By contrast, social work has limited photo opportunities. Up and down the council hierarchy, expectations are not always high and too often, the bar for acceptable performance is too low.

(A small quibble that makes your point sharper:

Haringey does not have the highest number of upheld complaints in the UK. That dubious honour goes to a local authority with a bigger population, I think it was Birmingham. Haringey has the highest number of complaints upheld by the Ombudsman, per capita (or per 100,000 residents). The relative comparison is actually worse. This distinction hasn't always been appreciated).

Shame on this woman's family , and her neighbors for neglecting her

While it is good to keep track of our not infrequently blameworthy Council, I wonder about the reason why there is no name, place address or anything else given that identifies who publishes "Haringey Community Voice", or who the people involved with "www.haringeyresidents.org/" are. There is a bland statement that it is "not about party politics" which strains crediblity given that it only emerged last month in the runup to next May's Council elections. Who is HCV? In this world of misinformation their bona fides cannot be taken on trust.
