Hello! Does anyone have any experience with the council's building control department? How quick are they to visit your site etc.? I'm not sure if it's worth using a private contractor or the council. Any advice is very welcome!

We used contractors, but HBC came in to sign things off as work progressed.
We put in the application pre works starting and the notified the council just before, like a day or two as stages were coming up. Our builders worked to a tight schedule and communicated with us well. The council were v responsive and always able to turn up on the day without holding things up. When they had queries we were able to send supplementary photos. When I needed to call someone always picked the phone up and passed messages on.
All in all, v impressed with the Council!- and it's NOT often I say that!
ah thank you! That's good to know. I've found the council website a bit confusing when it comes to the costing and what exactly is needed but will give them a ring to find out a bit more.
Thanks
Good luck. These things always depend on the individuals concerned, so hope you get the same staff we did. I distinctly got the impression there were only 2/3 people sharing a desk 😂
We also had a positive experience with Haringey Building Control just over a year ago (for a roof replacement). Yup the website was very confusing about costs and I had to phone to get that explained. I checked using a private contractor but for us council was cheaper. As J says - they always picked up the phone and were always able to visit when needed.
