Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

East bank just before mowing

Hi all;

I am just organising a clean up of the New River Path behind Wightman Road.

It will take place on Sunday, 2 July, 10am to 12pm.

It’s just an informal clean after Thames Water cut the grass.

If there a dozen of this, it won’t take too long.

Bags provided. You might want to bring some gloves.

Please message me if you have any questions.

Regards,

James Cowling

I want to come along, but that stretch is not wheelchair accessible. Doesn't Thames Water have an obligation under the Equality Act to make the area accessible to everyone?

The current gates shut out people due to poor design.

The New River is private land belonging to Thames Water. As such, I'm not sure that they have any such obligation - sorry.

If you open a private space to the public, I believe there are still obligations to make reasonable adjustments around access. Whether moral or legal.

Lots of campaigning by disabled cyclists to try and get rid of this kind of infrastructure which discriminates against disabled cyclists who might be using trikes, recumbents etc. It also discriminates against wheelchair users. A shame as there is little quiet public space to go and wander and reflect in - I would like access like anyone else to enjoy the space and be involved in clean-ups.

Achieving equality is vital, and it's not equality if your locking people out due to poor design.

In a perfect world......

I can only suggest you write to Thames Water and see what they say.

The trick is to allow disabled people in without turning it into a cycle highway. Turning the NRP into yet another roadway, with which this area is already well blessed, would do untold harm to this currently peaceful unhurried space.

Hi Park;  I'm just a person who has volunteered to put this clean up together, that's all.  I understand your concern, but you're telling the wrong people.  As John said below, you need to contact Thames Water to voice your concerns.  CUSTOMER.FEEDBACK@THAMESWATER.CO.UK  Its customer service is usually pretty good.  You could also speak with Disability Action Haringey.  It might be able to give you support in this.

I'm wondering whether wheelchair users can get in and out of those big 'kissing gates' at Highgate Wood, designed to stop cycles? There might not be enough space at the New River entrances though..

That's a great idea, would be up for joining that! (although might not be able to commit to full 4 hours), let me know where you will meet

Hi Dee; We can meet at the bridge about 100m in from the Wightman Road entrance. It’s just for two hours.

Cheers,

James

Ahh yes, clearly already been a long week when I misread that as 4 hours!! thanks
