In a fascinating pice of research that's been published this week, it turns out that our ponds have a soundscape that's every bit as rich as that of a rainforest. University of Bristol researcher Jack Grenhalgh has released some video of his recordings.
On a BBC radio interview, he explained that the video above is a 3 am recording and most of the sound you can hear on it is made by water-boatmen rubbing their hard body parts. Other soundscapes are evident at other times of day. You can hear the interview from 20:30 here.
More recordings on Greenhalgh's Twitter stream.

I wonder what our pond sound like?

Fascinating!
The water-boatmen clearly didn't go to a Catholic school.
Interesting, I'll stick my head into the aquarium tonight.
