Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hi all

For anyone out there who did a lovely kitchen extension. Does anyone regret doing a skylight?

I know they look gorgeous and bring light but I'm just worried that there is also no escaping the sun at hot moments and I'm not a fan or blinds or material in the kitchens.

I have west/south sun orientations - so bursting with sun from lunch onwards without a sky light at present.

Thanks

We love ours. It makes such a difference to what would often be quite a dark room. If you are extending then this would make things darker than they were before. The only downside is that it does lose a bit of heat compared to a ceiling, so make sure you account for that when working out the required radiator power (there are lots of websites with radiator calculators).  I haven't found it to be a problem in terms of overheating.

You don't need a skylight that's the full length of the room. Ours is about 1x1m - a Mardome Ultra.

Oh, there is one slight downside - need a long broom occasionally to get rid of the cobwebs!

We have three Velux windows in our north-facing kitchen extension.  I love them - they bring in lots of light and give good ventilation (using a very long pole to open them, wish I'd gone for electric opening!) when I'm doing a lot of cooking.  You can also get blinds for them if the sun is too much, though we haven't bothered because of the orientation of the kitchen.  Overall I'm very pleased to have gone for Velux rather than a skylight.

Thank you. Yes i feel that for a North or East facing kitchen its a bonus but for South or West that get plenty of sun (and too much at times),it just maybe is too much...
