Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I've been meaning to post the attached history from the Islington Local History Centre for a while now. It's a useful little history.

In the early '60s, older brother refused to go to a Cliff Richard concert that sis-in-law had tickets for, so I was pressganged into accompanying her!

Did you enjoy it?

It is seared on my memory, quoth he equivocally!

My uncle John Hawkins was a plasterer and had a part in the construction of the ornate plaster work above the screen - palm trees and middle-eastern looking designs. I remember going there when I was eight or nine (about 1960) to Saturday morning pictures - lots of 'Zorro' and Laurel & Hardy - and thinking how exotic the cinema was.

And yet another reminder of happy days... among them - seeing The Ten Commandments and Ben Hur, seeing the Beatles and even briefly interviewing George Harris - about kids playing hookey to buy Christmas show ticket!). I wish I had been around in the 70s to enjoy it as rock and pop venue - I had to make do with the Capital, Cardiff  and Queen, Elton John, Don McClean, Rod Stewart, Richie Blackmore and many more!
