It's the third time this has been done in the last few weeks on the same wall on St.Ann's Rd. Each time the owners have had to get their wall repainted. Each time it's anti Turkish government stuff presumably done by Kurdish kids. They've also done the same along West Green Rd several times in very prominent places.

It doesn't belong here. Why graffiti our streets to complain about the government in another country? If you want to do this as a protest do it on the Turkish embassy's wall or better still in Ankara!

I don't like graffiti and when I see any that grates, I report it. I assume you've done that?

But I'm not sure why you're so vexed about this particular graffiti. The best I can get from Google Translate is

Long live May 1st

live one flower

front (followed by what I take to  be the star of Kurdistan)

I don't know the significance of May 1st to the Kurdish national movement and I'm quite sure Google Translate hasn't quite captured the meaning of the graffiti correctly (Can anyone help?) Perhpas the last line refers to the Kurdish Front. If that's the case, Wikipedia tells us that "The Kurdish Front operates in Kurdish and ethnically-mixed areas in northern Syria....the Kurdish Front is part of a "project for a democratic Syria".

So, yes, it's probably about a political struggle related to self-determination that doesn't concern us directly. I can't see why that should be so offensive. Hasn't the media recently been consumed by another struggle about a people's right to self-determination. Aren't many of our public buildings flying symbols of that nation? Does that 'belong' here any more?

Any graffiti is bad; graffiti that is discriminatory or threatening is unforgivable. The one should be removed immediately, the other should be removed very quickly.

Nonetheless, I'm struggling to see why this graffiti offends you so much.

As to the council being scared to erase it, has it been reported? They've removed planters full of flowers that aren't sanctioned from Ladder streets. I'm sure they'd have no hesitation in removing both this graffiti as well as a graffitied flag of St George or Union Jack.

May Day is of international significance to trades unions and labour movements around the world. It commemorates the struggles and achievements of such movements through history. The Kurdish national movement is a left-wing movement which has long celebrated May Day.

Thanks, Barney. I wondered if it was May Day related. The web couldn't offer any other significance, but I didn't want to assume.

So you'd be happy for someone to spray paint a whopping great Ukrainian flag on your front wall?

Absolutely not. Did you skip the first and fifth paragraphs of my reply?

The side wall to the estate I live on has had many of its panels painted in the colours of the Ukraine flag. I rather like it. A friend who lives next to the estate once suggested we offer to repaint the wall as it was looking very shabby - the flags are a definite improvement

I've never understood the point of protesting against the Turkish government in Haringey. Its counter productive. It does make more sense to protest outside the Turkish Embassy or at representatives of the Turkish government. In Haringey no-one hears and blocking roads or graffiting walls just annoys people who might otherwise be sympathetic.

The council won't touch that. It would risk upsetting local Labour's power base before the election.

If someone painted a St George's flag there last week it would have been removed instantly.

What evidence do you have of this, Dan? Do you have experience of St George's flags being painted in other parts of the borough, or on this wall, even, and how quickly have they been removed? St George, don't forget, was a soldier of Cappadocian Greek heritage, now a part of Turkey. So surely, if Brian here is correct, a St George's flag would chime with "Labour's power base" and would therefore be left intact? Otherwise, I'm struggling to see a connection between this graffiti and another country's flag...

This is how the Sun and other right wing rags invented the concept of "the loony left". Tell a lie enough times and people believe it to be the truth.
