Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

electoral register sales / your national insurance number

Did you iknow that the government is currently consulting on what to do with the edited electoral register. There are 6 options:
  • abolish the Edited Register as soon as practicable;
  • set a timescale or ‘trigger point’ for abolition of the Edited Register;
  • abolish the Edited Register as soon as practicable, but extend access to the Full Register for other purposes to be decided in light of the consultation;
  • retain the Edited Register, but impose restrictions in legislation on who can purchase it and for what purposes;
  • replace the current ‘opt out’ provision with an ‘opt in’; or
  • improve guidance for the public about the Edited Register.
Did you know that the government is planning to make resgistering for a vote more demanding, i.e. you may have to give your NI number.

I know this is not a local issue but the contributors to this site are so learned and erudite and thoughtful I hope to get a useful response.

Interesting issue. I wasn't crystal clear on what the Edited Electoral Register is. I found this short piece on Westminster Council's site useful.

I was speaking with one of the big household data companies recently and it's scary how much they know about us and what we own, earn, think, buy and do.

What I didn't find on a quick skim of the interesting articles to which Omotn linked us was any mention of how the data is used. It's likely that some of the uses to which it is put serve a useful social purpose......or maybe not. If I were asked to cast my vote on this future of the register I'd want to understand more about that aspect first.
In case it's of interest - I wrote about this over on my blog just before Christmas, explaining (I hope!) the background and the different types of register: http://www.markpack.org.uk/should-copies-of-the-electoral-register-...
