Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Bus Lane Contravention - Green Lanes - turning left at Macdonalds to Sainsburys' Supermarket

Hello,
Does anyone have any experience of this?
Received a Fixed Penalty Notice of £120 dated 5th February for being in the bus lane on Monday 21st December 2009 at 9.40am turning left off green lanes past Macdonalds under the bridge to Sainsburys.

My questions are:
Is there a four week time limit of notification?
Is it worth going to see the video evidence?
There is no 50% reduction in paying within two weeks: should there be?
Is this a done deal?

Thank you.

Adrian.

A lot would depend on what they define as a major left turn. The Parking may say it's just a turn into a carpark and not a through road. But worth a try anyway.
But on Street view there is no bus lane...?!
You're right!

Look here.

Alan Stanton, care to comment?
I guess what this tell us is that the bus lane was lengthened at some point. I wonder why.
I'm not sure. There is a white solid line all the way. It's just the red surface which stops but the guidelines say that the bus lane does NOT have be painted red.

"Bus lanes may be surfaced in coloured material in order to emphasise their presence and discourage encroachment by other vehicles. However, coloured surfacing has no legal significance; it is the prescribed traffic signs and road markings which establish the legal status of a bus lane."
I appreciate your confidence, John. But I avoid commenting on statutory regulations and other legal issues - especially involving fines - unless and until:
● I've had a good look at the problem,
● Asked some questions,
● and I'm pretty sure of my ground.

Reading this thread it seems that key points have already been raised. But if you or anyone else would like me to send in a councillor's enquiry, I'll do so.

As a general issue, I think the reason for having bus lanes fines should always be compliance; and never as a cash cow. The pattern of income ought to be a 'spike' after a bus lane is put in, followed by an immediate and steep fall as drivers realise they'll be photographed and fined. If many hundreds of motorists continue to drive or park in the bus lane, then probably, that bus lane restriction is not working.

But there often are problems at the start or end of lanes, when most drivers are moving in or out of the other lanes with safety uppermost in their minds.

You need to give the image a moment to load. It shows the end of the Bus Lane to left of image. I do think they have shortened the left hand turn (bus lane free) space since this Streetview image was taken to 10m. If this isn't a 'major left turn' I don't know what is. Harringay Sainsbury's is one of the busiest in the UK.
Apologies if this debate is no longer useful to anyone (although it might be yet to Annie), but what has changed since the Streetview pictures were taken? I believe there is now a "bus lane ends" sign near to the left turn. But this cannot convert the preceding stretch of road into a bus lane. This is obvious. There still does not appear to be anything to say the left-hand lane under the bridge is barred to cars. Is there?
I think that bus lane is only in operation between 7-10am. I don't recall any other signs apart from the new 'bus lane ends' one but they don't usually tell you they are not for cars do they? It's presumed that you know to keep out of bus lanes during their operational times. (Something I learnt the punitive way!)
This is a reply to Louise - of course you are right about that - but there has to be a sign somewhere to say it is a bus lane or otherwise it isn't a bus lane?!!

There is a sign on the road saying "bus lane" but that is all the way up the road near China City or thereabouts...
Isn't the bus lane coloured red up until the 'bus lane ends' sign? I know there is some sort of demarcation as I've studiously driven round it on several occasions. Otherwise, I agree with you, it can't be a bus lane if it doesn't say it is!
Bushy - where did you get that from??

I will do my own research...
