Harringay online

Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

We keep being asked to pay 50p to pay by card in here if the food comes to less than £10.

I was wondering if they are actually allowed to do this? Anyone know?

It’s been illegal since January 2018. But whatever happens, customers will end up paying the charge. Either prices will go up, or like Just Eat, who added a 50p service charge the day the ban came into force, companies will find another way round it. If you like the business, you could just pay the charge and find a way to gently point out that he’s exposing himself to trouble if he carries on levying it.

[Hugh - to my surprise I've taken to using Just Eat quite a lot recently (can't stand Deliveroo) and the 50p charge is only applied by certain outlets]

One supposes it's those outlets that used to add a 50p charge for credit card use?

I had wondered at that apparently random charge so it's nice to understand its origin.

Sounds like a case for Trading Standards

As stated fee for using Credit Cards was made illegal

But some got away with calling it a Service charge

Not forgetting that it was a Government Request that cards was used

But aware many are still paying by cash

Woman got very upset the other day in store when paying for Her goods and asking for Cashback                  But cashier advised Her She did not have enough cash. Stood there demanding that Cashier got cash.

Even when advised by Cashier supervisor, that they had Cash machines in store

Thanks for these replies. Interesting to hear that they are acting illegally. They’ve done it a few times and have gotten very aggressive when politely challenged about it. Yes probably something for trading standards

I agree tbh. I do understand that you're annoyed about the 50p charge but I don't understand why you'd post about it online. I think they're great and if the 50p bothers you then go to the cash machine. In times like these our local traders /shops/independents need us and they really don't need posts like these online.

It might be Government Policy. but aware most small Shops are still taking Cash

T jewellery in Crouch End is also doing the same!

wish I had known at the time I would have spoken up

You are all missing the point ,every business that uses card machines has to pay at least 1.5 % on every transaction ,there are basically 3 major banks that own the majority of cards ,once we get to 90% of people using cards do you think for one moment it will stay at 1.5%.,not on your life ,we will all be paying at least 5% for starters. Also consider older people , & the blind who rely on cash.
The card machines have been proven to be a certain virus trap, because even if staff attempt to sterilise every machine after every transaction ,they can’t get inside machines which can house infections.

Desmond,

Where is this proof of the virus trap? Lighten up!

Paranoia strikes deep in the heartland
But I think it's all overdone
Exaggerating this and exaggerating that
They don't have no fun

PAUL SIMON. Have a good time 1975

Cards ,hard plastic surface holds virus ,insert in machine ,easy transfer.Plus 2%
