Linguist Aid for COVID-19
Hi everyone,
A friend of mine who is a software engineer has, with a friend, set up a grassroots initiative called Linguist Aid to try to help vulnerable people during the COVID-19 outbreak. The idea is that those with language skills sign up as volunteers and are paired with community mutual aid groups so that the mutual aid groups can reach vulnerable people in the community with whom they don't have a shared language - the volunteer might translate a leaflet, for example, or a shopping list. The whole thing is done remotely, in line with the new social distancing rules.
You can sign up either as a volunteer or as a mutual aid group needing language help on Linguist Aid's website: https://www.linguist-aid.org.uk/
This is not a Government or otherwise "officially endorsed" effort, it's a community self-organised initiative to try and help those who need it. The two organisers are young people who want to use their technology skills for the greater good, and I think they've found a great way to do it.
