Hi everyone,
I recently moved into the area just by Harringay station - I absolutely love it but the screeching of the trains on the tracks is incredibly loud and I was wondering if this has always been the case and whether this was a problem that others have noticed?
Does anyone think it can be solved?
Best wishes SOFD

It probably depends specifically on where you live - screeching on rails rarely occurs at higher speeds associated with the ECML in normal running.
If you live north of Harringay station its likely related to movements into Hornsey depot involving a number of low speed movements across pointwork. These will be prevalent at both sides of the morning and evening peak and at night,
The squeal of train wheels whilst conversing points and sharp curves has been an issue for the railway from the start. A test solution was utilised at Barnt Green on the edge of the West Midlands where the rails were sprayed with water to reduce the sound, but this was a number of years ago and wasn’t followed up. In any case the lines in question were sharply curved running lines. Points are a different matter.
Some of these noises actually emanate from the london concrete factory ( which is behind Harringey station), particularly at night.
The curving, rising connection between GOBLIN and ECML just south of the station has always been a screecher although hitherto little used. I believe that since electrification there has been an increase in traffic albeit still relatively low.
