Harringay online

Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

The Guardian Newspaper on Making Friends through Harringay Online

Harringay Online getting checks in the national press and on the BBC (even an Andrew Neil interview on Politics Today) used not to be a rare thing. Now though it is. So I was tickled this morning to receive a message from a HoL member about a recent HoL name check in The Guardian (thanks Chris).

It's an article about using online networks to make real-world friends. Apparently Harringay Online worked for the correspondent.

Using digital to make real-world connections with those who live around us was one of my main goals when I set up HoL.

We used to foster those connections more purposefully and there were meet-ups in the Salisbury every quarter (doesn't that all sound very Noughties), usually arranged by John Mc, if I remember right. I'm delighted to hear that HoL continues to make local connections well over a decade since we first trod the interwebs.

Really good article I thought. The isolation problem seems to get worse as you get older - people get  absorbed into family life and grandchildren, or simply more reluctant to leave their cosy homes...

Let's have another social, Hugh!

Aw that's nice. Well, if someone organises one, I will come, but possibly sit a bit sheepishly and quietly. I / we need more community organisations like this :)

I can relate to this. I recently read an article about 'background friends' which seems to sum up where I find myself at. Harringay is not where I was brought up, so I have no schools or education links, I don't have children (or even a dog) so no friends formed there. I work in the City & have many work friends, but have no contacts in my local area. When I read that article I realised there must be many more people like me. Any chance to develop actual real life friends, if only for meeting up for coffee or lunch would be lovely. Background friend

When I started living in the area there were more physical meeting up events - drinks in the Salisbury, and also the market which moved through three local primary schools.

I think it's a pity there isn't so much now - maybe time to have a monthly drink set up?

We too love to meet people in our community.

We would be willing hosts if a group wanted to reserve a table after work at the Finsbury and then watch our comedy show one Wednesday night.

If there is a housebound person who would like an occasional game of Scrabble, I would be happy to bring the game and see if it the arrangement works for us.
