Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Just to let people know there has been an accident on the left hand side of Wightman which is causing big hold-ups. Looked like a van had lost control and hit a skip and possibly someone's front garden. I don't know if anyone was hurt, I hope not.

Only one lane of traffic both ways, so lots of the usual argy-bargy and general good humour. Avoid if you can!

If that's the skip just after a pedestrian refuge, I looked at it yesterday and thought "hmm, a bit close "
Agreed - I've gone past it a few times thinking it was an accident waiting to happen. And it had no lights on it (a requirement of a skip license in haringey)...
Out of interest, who is to blame if the skip is badly positioned? Is it the skip company or the person who is hiring it?
Please forgive me Alison, if you already know this stuff. A few years ago I looked into growing problems with skips in Tottenham Hale ward. All skips are required to be licensed; and the terms of the licence includes safety issues.

There are a couple of useful pages on the Council's website. Here's the link to the Licence application form. With a page setting out detail such as: the positioning of skips; lighting; covering skips etc. This page explains that:
"The skip owner (supplier) has the responsibility to ensure that skips are positioned on the highway in such a way that they do not cause an obstruction to other road users. The supplier is responsible for ensuring that all appropriate regulations are adhered to.

I did some nagging about skips which were badly positioned and/or piled high and overflowing onto the road. I discovered that many skips were not licenced at all.

Subsequently, I was told the systems had been improved. And problems did seem to decrease. At minimum, my emails meant an officer from Highways went and inspected the skip.

If you're worried about a particular skip, please contact the Council - especially if you think it poses a serious hazard. Skips should not be overflowing. Nor a danger to either traffic or pedestrians. For example, I took up a complaint from several residents about a large skip stupidly positioned so it obstructed the sightline at a busy crossing where parents and children went to the park.

As usual, photos are helpful in illustrating as well as reporting the problem to council officers. A free Flickr account would let you post the photo online so other people locally know you've reported it. (Delete it when the skip's gone.)
Thanks Alan. The skip has now gone; all that remains are two crumpled looking cars. Useful to know who you'd report it to - I'll remember that for next time.
