Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hey All,
This is a message to all Harringay supporters.
I have been thinking a lot to the recent messages about your concern (mine too) to dirty roads on the Ladder and how we could tackle that.
We can all agree that what is done by the current contractor is not currently enough to solve the problem.
And I strongly believe that people living on the Ladder can actually contribute massively to make the area cleaner.
With the World Cleanup Day coming on the 15th of September, I thought this would be the perfect day to test our “love” for the community and make Harringay clean again.
I have already created a Facebook page and a group, as well as an Instagram account to showcase our actions.
On the Facebook group there is an event you can register if you want to/can volunteer on that day. I have suggested to organise that in the afternoon.
To keep this message short, I am looking for volunteers for the 15th of September to clean the roads on the Ladder. I have tested it on Allison Road last week and I believe that we need on average (not all roads are in the exact same state) a couple of hours for each road to give a decent state. Once accomplished we can all celebrate the success in a café.
Last thing, the idea is to have shop owners supporting the initiative as well as any individual who are caring for their neighbourhood. I have been talking to a handful of shop owners and all support the idea. Indeed, they all have interest to have clean roads and nice environment.
I will be talking to some stores and coffee shop owners to see if they can support the initiative in any way. More info to come.
Looking forward to having your feedback on the initiative and if you are keen to join the movement.

This seems like a really nice idea. I'd be interested in helping out for an hour or two on 15th. I live on Pemberton. Is there any equipment available (litter picking things?) or should we just wing it?

Thanks Alice for your positive response. That would be great to have your help. For the moment I haven't managed to get rubbish pickers or anything but I will see if I can get anything for the volunteers (I got mine last week). otherwise, a pair of gloves and rubbish bags will do the jobs.

This is the same day as the Film Night in Fairland Park. I will buy people taking part in this a drink there from 5:30.

I’d love to have been involved but sadly I’m away. Definitely keen for future events though.

John that would be simply amazing. And i will be definitely there at the Film Night.
@dbh1954 no worries, the plan is to make other "events". Ideally you wouldn't need those but I feel that it is now necessary. one example I received a text from a friend today (in Harringay too), that his kid ( 6 yo) picked up a syringe outside his school. That is just scary and unacceptable

I think this is an excellent idea and I will certainly participate. Not to discredit the goodwill of the community, but I think this would be a good opportunity to protest. I would like to suggest that we keep the rubbish we collect until the Monday when we can accompany the rubbish outside the council building to demonstrate. I understand that there may be more important things to spend our taxes on (social housing and health, for example). However, I do feel that having littered streets does have an impact on the well being of our community. The scale of rubbish in Harringay, not just small but large items, is marked. If you would like to demonstrate regarding this issue please send me a message or reply to this thread.

Hello Elisa,

Thanks for your message and propose to help.

I have arranged with Veolia to collect the rubbish from a specific point so it is too late for that kind of initiative. I also believe - but I might be wrong - that it is better to cooperate with the council rather than protest. I don't know it could be my nature to look for consensus rather than looking for "battle".

We will take pictures and share on social medias and hope that other time it will provide an incentive to the council to do more in the future to tackle that problem.

see ou on saturday @blend café at 2pm

Quick update: Meeting point will be at Blend café from 2pm. A table at the back is booked for us.

Another news, we should get some kit for Saturday. I'll let you know what it contains once I get them. But I would advise to bring gloves with you. I will provide some rubbish bags could you PM me your details (mobile and email)

Thanks in advance

See you on saturday @2pm

Loïc

What sort of turnout are you expecting? I can only do about an hour but happy to help. Will we have assigned streets?

unfortunately, it will be only a few people but it is a good start. one hour is perfectly fine. we will decide on which streets but in one hour I guess you will have time only for one road

Hi,

To those interested to volunteers to clean the roads on the Ladder, we are meeting at 2pm at Blend café. A table is booked at the back.

Bring some gloves, and I will bring the rubbish bags.

See you soon

Loïc
