International Day against Homophobia - 17th May
It's often the big bullies that are most afraid..
The 17th May is the International Day against Homophobia. This week, one of the world's former Superpowers was so *afraid* of a group of around thirty LGTB demonstrators that it felt it necessary to end the demonstration violently.. which proves to those of us who are not prepared just to be 'swept under the carpet', that there is still a long way to go and still lots to do.
These days, many people in Western Europe 'pooh pooh' the need for such days of action, but they are still necessary - Iran regularly executes people just for being gay (often juveniles) - we have all seen the disgusting pictures before.. One thing is sure in my mind - I will never rest until the day comes when the people that sanction such murderers, are brought to justice.. and I'm convinced that it will come..
Love deserves respect
No different to racial attacks on people, homophobia often ends with someone loosing their life - a close friend of mine was murdered on Green Lanes in 1977 after a night out at Manor House. Sadly, over the last few years, homophobic ideas are having to be fought on a whole new front.
..and a kiss can be dangerous..
In Germany, where during the n*zi period hundreds of thousands of Gay Men & Lesbians were degraded, tortured and murdered; a national memorial to the dead has now been erected in the capital... I must say, reading the dedication, still gives me goosebumps..
Lastly on a lighter note, gays haven't yet lost their sense of humour - won't allow themselves to be sidelined so do have some fun as well!.
