Read here about how we in the UK do as active participants in European democracy. No prizes for the general drift of the message there.

Feel you should do better? I do (about me, not you!). Then dig around on the EU website for a few minutes and learn at least a little more.

As Britain forces leave Basra - and an illegal occupation of Iraq slowly comes to an end- It is fitting to remember that without the EU and the linking of countries into an economic and social system, Europe might have fallen back into the bad old days of brinkmanship and war..

65 years without confrontation in Western Europe is quite an acheivement.. so much so, that for most people these days, a war in Western Europe has now become inconceivable..
There's a well written article by Timothy Garton Ash on the European elections in today's Guardian:

In Britain last time round, fewer people voted to decide who should represent them in the glass house in Brussels than did to choose who should stay in the Big Brother house on television.....So let's face it: we do not have a functioning, legitimate and effective Europe-wide direct democracy, nor will we any time soon.

Reading it, I realised that I have no idea who the candidates are for our area or what the issues are. Perhaps we should find out.

Apparently the candidates should be confirmed by 7th May (sounds a bit close to the wire to me). We can perhaps then begin to understand the issues they're fighting on.
