Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hi folks

I'm trialling a new singing for wellbeing group at Finsbury Park cafe on Friday mornings in November (3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th). 9.30-10.30am. No singing experience required whatsoever!

Singing with other people in a non-judgemental space is great for a variety of health conditions including asthma and COPD. It can be a real mood and confidence booster. It also helps to build community connection in an era where many of us feel isolated.

We will do relaxing breathing exercises, gentle stretches, some easy and playful vocal technique. And of course we will sing some uplifting and simple songs together.

No singing experience required, honestly- 'there's no such thing as I can't sing'! People from all walks of life and voices of all shapes and sizes are warmly welcome.

Please see the attached poster. The cafe is near the boating pond and it is wheelchair accessible. Children are welcome to accompany you (though the focus is on songs for adults). £5/£3 (pay what you can afford. If £3 is unaffordable for you, please get in touch for a cheaper or free place).

I've run singing groups, including Singing for Better Breathing groups for 9 years now. I love it because the transformation in individuals and in community relationships is very fulfilling to see.

Please ask me any questions, including if you have any accessibility needs you'd like me to know about.

A Facebook group is here

With love,

Shilpa

wow! Good luck!  I'll come when I can.

Great - it will be lovely to sing with you

hmmm, singing's definitely so good for you in sooo many ways.

It really is - there is plenty of research showing it can help people experiencing COPD, asthma and other breathing conditions, dementia, Parkinson's, mental health conditions including anxiety and depression as well as more general benefits of being in positive, gentle, non-competitive connection with others in the community. I know it's helped build my confidence and sense of voice too.

Hi
Are you planning to do any other days as well ?

HI Siobhan,

Sorry for the late reply, just saw this. It depends how this one goes and if there is demand for another one. I'm hoping to start one in Downhills Park cafe too - the wonderful owner there is very keen aswell. Hope to sing with you soon! Shilpa

Hello HOL, a reminder that this new Sing for Wellbeing group starts tomorrow morning.

I've got some relaxing breathing and stretching planned as well as some very simple but lovely songs to get us going.

Am very happy to give any HOLers a quid off the entry tomorrow. Just tell me you saw it here. Anyone who wants to join, though sit and listen to start if you're not confident with your voice, is more than welcome to do that. That's how a lot of people start off. Know that voices of all shapes and sizes are very welcome - we sing to make us feel good, not to please the Simon Cowells of this world!

Hope to sing with some of you this month!
