I need to replace the iron manhole cover on a drain access in the back garden and have discovered it's far from standard size (it's conceivably even the original Victorian one), at approx 430mm x 670mm (circa 17ins x 26ins). Suppliers such as Travis Perkins and Jewson only stock modern metric covers that won't fit and I can't find the right size on a Google search, so I probably need a reclaimed one (otherwise I'll have to get the whole thing rebuilt with a new frame and cover). Can anyone suggest a local-ish salvage or scrap merchant that would be worth a look?

Hi Don
We have had this problem before with a cracked iron cover and its not likely you will find a direct replacement that will pop straight on to the existing frame.Cut out the old one and put in a nice new frame and cover with the correct loading ( a grade A should be ok for foot traffic ). Essential to stop unwanted visitors from coming up from it !!
