Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Fines slapped on struggling shopkeepers ...as others are let off the hook.

Stores fined over 'no smoking' signs.

Quote;

At least two shops in Crouch End Hill were fined and another two issued with warnings during an enforcement operation last Tuesday over 'no smoking' signs.

View Opticians is one of the stores to challenge the hefty £250 ticket, after a break-in two months ago meant it had yet to replace the sign on the newly-fitted front door.

Owner Rohini Jansari said: "It's a very extreme reaction and completely inappropriate - we really don't need this, not at this time. Smoking has never been allowed in here, even before the ban, so why would anyone do it now. There are a lot of things you shouldn't do in a shop like stealing or assaulting people - do we need to put a sign up for everything?"

Owners of Carters Glass, who were forced to halve the size of their store because of the financial squeeze, escaped a fine and were issued with a warning.

Co-owner Ray Prior said: "We have just moved everything into this shop a couple of months back and the last thing on our minds was getting the no smoking sign up back up again."

Traders in Crouch End attacked the clampdown, accusing Haringey Council of squeezing cash out of them for a trivial offence.

Makes my blood boil !
Apparently it's OK to make examples of some shops and let off others with a warning, same day, same enforcement officers.

If 4 cars were parked on a yellow line I wonder if every alternate one would get a ticket .....
what a silly thing to fine people over! everybody knows that you cant smoke in enclosed public spaces- we dont need signs telling us that anymore. good grief. i hope they waive it.
Yes it's pretty much the opposite of what the Chancellor would want local bodies doing to small businesses. It really does look like extortion under the veil of officialdom.
Draconian UK.

Everyone knows you can't walk into a school building with a fag hanging out of your mouth but they still have to put up a 'No Smoking on these premises' sign.

The council enforcement officers will be around fining council schools next.
'No Smoking' signs in churches and cathedrals must be of appropriate dimensions and prominently displayed. It makes neither sense nor incense.
If anyone had the time and energy, I'd bet you could find a whole heap of petty infringements in council buildings, from missing no smoking signs to half empty fire extinguishers
View Opticians claim it's an oversight. "Obviously with hindsight Canver should send her enforcers to Specsavers."
How petty!
Why not clamp down on the shop owners who stand in their own doorway smoking, so all their disgusting smoke goes right back in the shop? Namin no names, but there's a newsagent's up the road who won't be getting my business anymore, I am way too astmathic to shop there!
Why don't we just put one big sign on the way into the borough saying "Don't be naughty"
Seriously though, I have heard that enforcement officers are very pissed off because they are being expected to reach "fine tagets". That's like working out the capacity of the UK prison system and then filling it up to that level. Oh, that's actually what's happened isn't it?
