The Postal Vote is the Antidote
Whether by accident or design, the timing of Labour former Councillor James Ryan’s resignation and of the statutory two demands for a by-election have resulted in its being called for the 28th July.
Because this falls in the school holidays, when many families will be away it is necessary that everyone should know how to get a postal vote in order to ensure that they are not disenfranchised.
If you want a postal vote, you can download an application from the Electoral Commission’s website http://www.aboutmyvote.co.uk/frequently-asked-questions/voting-by-post and deliver the completed form to the COUNCIL at the Civic Centre or by post to The Electoral Registration Office P.O. Box 264, Civic Centre, High Road, London N22 8LE.

It's by design. Pat Egan died in July and they waited until OCTOBER to hold the by-election. Some in the Labour Party have had advance notice of James' departure and so start ahead of everyone else.
What is the point of having a postal vote if you don't know what you're voting for? School holidays (for some schools) start in three weeks. With all the preparations that families may have to make before jetting off somewhere do you really think they'll be making this a priority?
It is unfair and disenfranchises the kind of people who MAY vote LibDem.

Personally, I don't know enough to be able to say whether it was the result of a slip-up or of calculation. If in fact it was the latter, that would be most unfortunate, because it would have involved playing fast and loose with people's right to vote.
Which reminds me, the time table is very tight indeed.
Postal vote applications must be received by the Council no later than 5 pm on Wednesday, the 13th July.

Further to the above, if you are minded to apply for a postal vote, please remember that it may not reach you before the 18th July (though the returning officer is aiming at an earlier date if possible). To be on the safe side, therefore, if you are planning to be away before the 18th, you might want to consider asking for a proxy vote instead of a postal vote. The Council's electoral services can help you, and you can always drop me a message if you wish to.
