Two pieces came across my desk this week which offer very different ways to recycle stuff you no longer need or want.
The first is a very traditional church-run network whose strapline in "bridging the gap between those who have and those who need."
Local besoms provide a service that enables you to pass things you no longer need to people who really need them. Those who are re-housed are often given flats with absolutely nothing in them. Those escaping domestic violence may have to leave all their possessions behind. Through a network of contacts in social services, charities, refuges and family centres, The Besom constantly hears about people living on the edge. We are then able to match up the things given with the needs we hear about.
If you have good quality items you wish to give away, your local Besom would love to receive them. We can pass them on immediately to vulnerable people who really need them. These include women escaping domestic violence, homeless people, refugees, families or individuals living in extreme poverty.

Alerted by my colleague Kevin Harris I also came across a very much more 21st century approach. Set up by a couple of Bondi Beach likely lads, Garage Sale Trail is an orchestrated movement to help communities set up area-wide garage sales. This year it'll be happening all over Australia on the same day in May.
The website describes it as being "for anyone who wants to make some money or raise money for a cause and for anyone who wants to connect with their community".
Here's an interview with the two Bondi Boys who are currently in the UK to introduce theor idea over here.
