I've noticed this unusually thick forest of rather large satellite dishes opposite the Arena Shopping Park before, but just passed it by. What with the ADA Satellite shop being due to move up the road to Grand Parade, I thought it was a good time to ask if anyone knew why there's this forest of satellite dishes around ADA's current premises.
I haven't noticed anything else like it along Green Lanes. Now, this could just be because I'm only occasionally perceptive or it could be that there's a technical reason for the residents in those flats needing so many dishes. It could also just be coincidence, or it could be an advertising ploy by ADA. I mention this since, if it's the latter, will we see the rash spreading to Grand Parade?
Any idea anyone?

I hadn't noticed this - I'm usually driving so concentrating on avoiding all the pedestrians flinging themselves into the road and cars doing 3 point turns. It looks really, really ugly.
At one point our neighbour had 3 dishes on the house. It's a rented house and each time someone new moved in they got a new dish without taking the old ones down. The most annoying one was massive it over hung our bedroom window a little bit. Thankfully some one saw sense and they've just got one smallish one now.
It's caused by lack of enforcement by the Planning Department. Rules on satellite dishes state max of TWO dishes per premises up to 15m high and max of FOUR on premises above 15 m high.
In ADA's case, they probably want to be able to demonstrate programmes from a number of different satellites - Turkish - Polish, Sky, Spanish / Portuguese etc, and the appropriate satellites may be in different orbital positions requiring separate dishes.
I wonder though. It's not just the ADA premises. There are 31 dishes on the first ten buildings after Endymion Road. As I said, I don't recall seeing that many elsewhere along the Lanes. I'm just wondering what it is about this short stretch.
My new upstairs neighbours just slapped one on the front of our house. They just didnt understand why I got so pissed off. It's now instantly branded as BTL, which it isn't.
I took a shot of this about a year ago. I agree, it needs to be dealt with. I know the funding for the spruce up does not cover that area, but we really need to clear out all the clutter along GL.
" they'll only last as long as the technology "
Unfortunately not. There are hundreds of the old analog Sky dishes still around. Installers seldom take the old dish away.
In fact - you can still see aerials for the Band 1 405-line service that closed in 1985
Having read your interesting comment Anne, I too took a virtual stroll down the west side of Green Lanes and here's what I counted:
Hewitt - Seymour: 0
Seymour - Warham: 3
Warham - Permberton: 2
Pemberton - Mattison: 8
Mattison - Duckket: 9
Duckett - Cavendish: 8
Cavendish - Burgoyne: 11
Burgoyne - Umfreville: 5
Umfreville - Lothair: 10
Lothair - Endymion: 27
So, four more have sprouted on the final stretch since the Streetview photo was done in September 2008. I imagine that would be broadly similar for the other stretches. But, if we assume for a minute that the relative numbers have stayed about the same, the number on the Lothair - Endymion stretch is roughly between three and ten times that of the number in any other stretch. There has to be some reason for that.
