Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

The Hornsey Area has been identified as the next area for treatment in the DIY Streets initiative.

Following the DIY Streets project recently undertaken in the Langham Road/Turnpike Lane area, the initiative will aim develop innovative traffic calming solutions to address speed issues and to encourage more walking and cycling. It also aims to improve the streetscape of a neighbourhood and helps to build community links.

The Smarter Travel 'fun event' this weekend has been designed  aid the identification of key areas that can be focused upon for the DIY Streets treatment.

If this is in Campsbourne then I'm impressed but if it's North of the High Street, not so.

Will they be taking into account the potential of a new Sainsbury's on the old water works site?

Like they did when giving planning permission to open a Tesco on the High Street without access at the rear for unloading ?

I struggle to see the point in these things.  They are supposed to be about stopping rat-running, reducing speeds, making the area safer for cyclists and walking.  Yet all they offer are speed-calming measures.

If you want to see areas that are actually safe for cyclists and walkers and aren't rat runs and so are pleasant to be in, block the side roads so they are access only and leave them permeable for cyclists - as has been done in areas of Hackney (de Beauvoir town and South of Finsbury Park).

Leaving roads as through routes while putting in speed calming encourages the speeding vehicles to remain, with last-second braking for obstacles.  So it seems to me that a lot of money is being spent where a couple of big slabs of concrete would have done the job.
