This is good start but I wonder if it is enforcable seeing as they cannot do it with betting shops

Fast food may become less readily available in the borough if Haringey Council plans are waived through.

The council is working on creating a fresh planning policy which could give communities a “greater influence” on the number of fast food outlets springing up in the borough.

The new policy would focus particularly on fast food outlets near schools to tackle the growing levels of childhood obesity, particularly in the east of the borough.

The policy is in draft form at the moment and the council plans to launch a public consultation later in the year.

A statement, released by the council, said: “Hot food takeaways represent a popular service and are a complementary use in town and local centres, including their contribution to the night time economy.

“Nevertheless, it is recognised that over-provision of hot food takeaways can have a detrimental impact on residential areas and on the feel of a locality and that a greater variety of food and more choice is preferable.

“This is particularly important in areas where a range of lifestyle choices and social issues contribute to lower life expectancy.”

The news comes after a public health report, released yesterday, shows one in three children aged between ten and 11 in Haringey are either overweight or obese.

The report exposed the east of the borough as having a far greater number of obese and overweight children than the more affluent west, which has fewer fast food outlets.

I agree, TW.

Part of the problem is the low cost of some fast food - I've seen fried chicken & chips on sale near a school for almost half the price of a school dinner, or roughly the same price as a packed lunch.
