Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

The Old Refreshment Room by Finsbury Park lake

This is the old refreshment room (now long gone) by the lake. I'd just bought a new Minolta camera so took this photo of the student making some drawings and luckily got the building in.

As a kid we'd get a glass of Tizer for a penny. If we had real pocket-money - an ice cream between two wafers!

The double railing was to guide the queue for the rowing boats.

Our old house in Woodberry Grove gave easy access to the New River but fishing in the 1940s and early 50s was strictly forbidden.

When my friends and I sneaked onto the river banks we were always on the lookout for the uniformed Water Bailiffs who rode bikes - and we were terrified of being caught by them. The fences were very carefully maintained and our ‘secret’ ways in were few.

I’ll always remember the crystal clear flowing water and the perfectly maintained banking. On a hot day we’d scoop up a cupped hand-full of the water for a cooling drink.

Now, knowing of it’s amazing construction and life saving purpose for London it always has beautiful memories for me

Does anyone have a photo of the cafe that replaced this one - was there in the 80's and Friends Of Finsbury Park used to meet there. Was run by an Italian family.

Lovely to read this article and to see the map and photo of the grand Tearoom.

I remember as a kid, standing up on a stage there and maybe reading a page or so from a book ? or quoting a poem or such. I got a paperback book as a prize. I wasn't quite so shy then.
