I love Turnpike Lane station, as a building that is.

If you like that Art Deco style John I am sure you like Napier in your home country, although there wasn't as many railings.

The new approach to street furniture is to do away with railings and allow more flow of pedestrians across a road at more points, at the same time putting in measures to slow traffic down. Kensington High St has just been completely refurbished using these principles and it looks great. Less signage clutter too.

That old photo of Turnpike looks so peaceful compared to the chaos below.

Not been to Napier since I was about 10 I think. I am an Art Deco fan though,

this was my favourite art deco building in Wellington.

The building in Wellington is an Art Deco building, unfortunately Turnpike Lane Station isn't. Art Deco buildings have "geschwunge" styling and have bright colour schemes.
Turnpike Lane station along with most LT stations built between 1931 & WW2 were influenced by a style used in Holland and Northern Germany, known as the Amsterdam School or De Stijl group. Buildings in these styles generally use a mixture of red brickwork and larger windows. (see my photos on HOL) or here:

I suppose the old "Umbrella" has gone from the front of Turnpike Lane Station .. a small round concrete(?) structure handy for sheltering from the rain or meeting people under!

Pedestrians - pavements, wheeled traffic - roads. The railings are there because stupid pedestrians, usually blinkered by hoods and deafened by I-pods, cannot be trusted to cross roads at the designated crossings. Live and let live.
