I was interested to see the portrait in Fig. 2 crop up in an episode of the ITV programme ‘DNA Journey’ featuring Alison Hammond the other day.

The story of Lescene and Alison’s blood-relative. Jean Escoffery, is fascinating and will be of particular interest to those interested in black history.

Thanks, Dick and Richard. I couldn’t quite believe it as the story revealed itself. I’d known about Whistler, but then we added a painting of the father at an anti-slavery convention, Beecher Stowe, Elizabeth Fry, Frederick Douglass and Whistler’s mother herself.

Thanks Allen. I had the photos of the Gothic pile but what eluded me were the exact purchase and rebuild dates. It’s good to see a purchase date. The rebuild will have to remain as a rough 1850-1865ish. I had no idea that Alexander’s father had bought up the whole block.

Great info & research!

The area round The Willows & Paradise Row looked lovely! And my cousins grew up near Clissold Park - still a nice place!

You know that quip about a pleb being someone who thinks of the Lone Ranger when hearing the William Tell Overture?

Well I'm not too proud to confess that my mind instinctively turned to a once renowned local seaside coach operator when I saw the title reference to Grey and Green.

Mind you, I partially redeemed myself culturally upon reading the bit about George William, Alexander's father starting as a lowly clerk and working his way up to a partnership It prompted a mental fragment of "When I Was A Lad" in HMS Pinafore ;-)

When I was a lad I served a term
As office boy to an Attorney's firm.
I cleaned the windows and I swept the floor,
And I polished up the handle of the big front door.
I polished up that handle so carefullee
That now I am the Ruler of the Queen's Navee!

As office boy I made such a mark
That they gave me the post of a junior clerk.
I served the writs with a smile so bland,
And I copied all the letters in a big round hand.
I copied all the letters in a hand so free,
That now I am the Ruler of the Queen's Navee!

[etc]
