Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

HAS ANYONE NOTICED THE ABSENCE OF THE WOODPECKERS FROM BOTH DOWNHILLS AND LORDSHIP REC. I WONDER IF THIS IS DOWN TO THE ARRIVAL OF THE PARAKETS. ANYBODY HAVE ANY THOUGHTS ON THIS

I've still got at least a pair, maybe more, not quite a 'descent' ( got to use it when you can :) of greater spotted ones visiting my yard near Woodgreen tube, they love the suet, they munch about a handful at every sitting and take about ten minutes to wolf it down. I guess it's for their chicks too.

They're making wilko's a fortune,

There used to be a pair of green woodpeckers that were often seen in Lordship in the Model Traffic Area and near the cafe area, but since the park regeneration there have only been rare sightings in the park.  This may be co-incidental, or it may be because a lot of old shrubs (and the insect life on them) were removed and replaced with new plants.  Or it may be they were disturbed by the heavy machinery and found a new place to nest.  I have heard at least one in the last few weeks so maybe they will return.  Last year I saw greater spotted woodpeckers in Downhills, though I haven't seen or heard them yet this year.  Meanwhile the parakeets have been around a few years now and it's the crows & seagulls that seem to get into fights with them

Funny - I've only ever seen Woodpeckers singly.

I don't know if there was a nesting pair which has now left the Rec but the Green Woodpeckers feed mainly on grass rather than in trees. That said I've never seen one in the Rec or in Downhills although in the latter location I would often hear Greater Spotted drumming in the old trees just to the north of the playground...

The best place for Green Woodpeckers though seems to be the pitch'n'putt green at Ally Pally.
They don't feed together much, think I only saw them feeding together once. Usually always see them one at a time.

This was taken in April 2012, up the poplars in Lordship.  Not brilliant but definitely green woodpecker.

Wow, managed to get one of the wood peckers to start feeding on my feeder right next to the bedroom window. Took a couple of years but finally managed it. Just got to keep the feeder full now and she should keep coming back.

The next trick will be to get the ipad to motion capture and film her.

Fingers crossed.

Also got a pair of blue tits nesting in a bird box two and half meters from my back garden door. Not bad hey ?

They're back!  After hearing a Green Woodpecker calling for a few weeks I finally saw it yesterday in Lordship, near the paddling pool.  Only taken with a compact camera from a distance so not the best shot.  And also one of a Greater Spotted Woodpecker I saw in Downhills last week.

That's where they went - Harringay!

That is, one Greater Spotted Woodpecker, at least, has moved in to the neighbourhood. I have seen Blackcaps, Tits and Swifts in of from my garden and in the summer a twittering Goldfinch laid claim to an aerial on a house opposite the house.

This week a newcomer arrived - loudly signalling its presence with its "chit" call and characteristic bouncing flight as it flitted from a household TV aerial on a house backing on to hours into a free in their garden.

The bird is a male - you can just about make out the red on the crown on the attached photo - and seemed to be carrying nesting material when I first saw him on Saturday. Whether he is here to stay or whether his residency will prove to be more transient - like many in our road - only time will tell...
And here's that photo...

Two Greater Spotted Woodpeckers together a few days ago here on the ladder, on the oak tree by the passage between Falkland & Frobisher Rds. Wonderful to see :)
