Your right. I think the problem is two fold - developers can drive a coach, horses and Epsom race coarse though the planning regs, and councils reluctance to spend any money on capital projects only to have the government force them to sell what they've just built.

Hi Andy. I totally agree that there should be a contribution to society. My point is that the council skim off money for affordable housing but don't seem to produce anything. This in turn puts up the price of housing. I feel the buyer is giving the council a gift that disappears into ether. This particular development is genuine and is going ahead. This whole Community Infrastructure Levy will lead to some major legal battles and maybe council spending might become more transparent. The way…

I have great sympathy with your anger and with your disbelief at the sale of HA properties. Bad landlords should be dealt with and the ones like your relatives encouraged to help make the best of what is a shitty situation for many in the housing trap.

I'm also skewed beyond making carefully reasoned posts by anger at the deliberate and wholesale removal of social housing including the mad idea to force Housing Associations to sell off their stock. If there is no such provision then the rachmans will expand to fill the gap, as well as all the nice ones like my friends and relations with their one-dwelling small businesses.

Yes there are bad landlords, just as there are bad doctors and architects, but in my view a knee-jerk characterisation of all landlords as being Rackmanesque, is as inaccurate and unhelpful as one painting all doctors with the Shipman brush.

my perspective is skewed by not having managed to acquire that crucial second property in my 40s. And some of the landlords round here are pretty scary, judging by the speed with which they shoot in and out of their houses.

Hi hob, I don't want to be disparaging but as Mcenroe once said 'you can't be serious'!'no developer is going to reduce the market value of a property for someone else to profit on resale. This a blatent atempt to increase profit margins from the development without providing some money for the wider community. And I suspect this won't be the end, if this get through, and it will, the developer will sell the site with planning to Paul Simon and they will double the size of the development -on…

This a blatent atempt to increase profit margins from the development without providing some money for the wider community. And I suspect this won't be the end, if this get through, and it will, the developer will sell the site with planning to Paul Simon and they will double the size of the development -on appeal- and create another set of rabbit hutches. Sadly, this is the result of no social housing development since Thacher.
David Lammy, Tessa Jowell and Sadiq Khan have between them taken more than £100,000 in donations from property developers alone in their race for the Labour Party's mayoral nomination.
