Was the garden of Lake Villa a public park before they pulled down all the buildings in the photo? Looks like someone with a pushchair coming towards the gates. Am I right in thinking that the council bought the land in the mid-1920s but didn't start on the town hall until the early 1930s?

It's not a great photo, but you can see the rather unprepossessing houses here. on the right.

I think they did, but extended at ground level, towards the street as shop-houses. In the 1892-3 Kelly's, the pair directly to the north of Dunn's are shown as 8-10 Broadway (Belle Vue House), a draper's shop.

Did they survive until the town hall was built? Layout on the 1895 maps looking very different - did they have single story shops built in front of them?. Are there any photos?

If you count the gardens as shown by the garden boundaries on the 1869 map, you'll see there were in fact four houses. They were 1 to 4 Belle Vue Terrace. The 1871 census lists the occupation of Henry Mountain in No 2 as 'Shareholder in public company' and of Walter Hazel and No. 4 as 'printer employing 67 people'. A 'gent' called William Cooper used to live At number 3, in the mid 1860. He must have been an artist of some sort since his 1842 picture Cattle…

When I first moved to Crouch End-Hornsey mid 1970's, pub closing was 10.30 pm with liberated plebeian? Wood Green being 11.00 pm. The old licensing areas perhaps matched the old boundaries ? I know you had to cross the East Coast Main rail Line divider

Terrific - thank you Hugh. Interesting that the basic form of the place has not changed that much - two y-junctions leading id opposite direction joined by what becomes the Broadway. Amazing.

BTW, I found 'new window' worked better than new tab. Win10 of course.
