Following a chance conversation with Hornsey Park local, Marcus Ballard over the weekend and a few useful follow-up emails, I have replaced Fig. 3 above. My previous maps suggested that any remains of Brick Place might lie more under the New River than the railway line. The newly re-discovered plan from the 1846 London and York Railway Bill from a piece written by Malcolm Stokes in 1996, shows it is more likely to be slap-bang under the railway, with possibly other vestiges under the New…

What a wealth of information. My Dad was very keen on the history of the New River living as we did in Harringay and he worked in Clerkenwell not far from Sadler’s Wells. I now live about two miles from Chadwell Springs.

I'd like to add my thanks for this impressive research. The photo in fig.15 brings a level of detail I've never seen.

The map (available from Old Maps) showing the GNR 'in progress' (1850) but probably recording features a bit earlier shows the lane in the photo bisected by the old course of the new river: that's the first time I've seen anything like this.
The map (available from Old Maps) showing the GNR 'in progress' (1850) but probably recording features a bit earlier shows the lane in the photo bisected by the old course of the new river: that's the first time I've seen anything like this. The map even suggests that the lane may have continued in an arc to rejoin Turnpike (Tottenham) Lane somewhere around Westpoint (Goulding Court), before the railway split the fields. The photo also shows the pre railway contours - I imagine the gradient of the lane must have been similar to the modern day New River Avenue at the bottom Cross Lane (where the change is quite dramatic). The lower level, within c.1m of Western Road/Hornsey Park Road must have been the same level as Brick Place - so the site is buried some 5m below the modern ground level. On which subject, could it be possible that the feature at the western edge of the railway embankment in the map is the moat of Brick Place. The location relative to the parish boundary suggests not and yet it is strikingly similar in scale and orientation. Just a thought.

Thanks, Andy. As to publishing it as a booklet, maybe. Even in this internet age, I think publishing something physically still counts for more than publishing it on the internet. But my understanding of publishing, even self-publishing is that it's a lot of faffing around. That's why I say, maybe.
