Apologies if I’ve missed a discussion about this, but does anyone know what the issue is with these lights, which were installed as part of the recent work on Wightman Road? Why don’t the lights flash, as you’d expect with a zebra crossing?

The Council has also said that tree planting elsewhere across the borough will go some way towards offsetting the necessary removal of diseased, dying or dead trees. It is not known whether or not any of these replacements is headed our way.

Having secured funding from the Greater London Authority’s Greener City Fund, 50 trees are going to be planted in Finsbury Park. There's a post about helping out with the planting here.

Unfortunately due to unforeseen circumstances, some features of the scheme such as the tree pits and part of the drainage system had to be revisited to comply with the most up-to date road safety and sustainability regulations and the contractor has been waiting the delivery of specific materials to undertake the work.

We have reviewed the scheme with our contractor and have programmed these works to recommence next week, it is now forecast that these additional works along with the programmed tree planting, will be completed by the end of November 2019.

The build outs (horse-shoe things) , once completed, will have a tree planted and complementary sustainable drainage feature included, to maximise absorption of water by the trees.

We apologise for the delays to this scheme, and will endeavour to complete the outstanding works as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Temporary Rung Road Closures - a Pattern for the Future?tag:harringayonline.com,2019-08-08:844301:Topic:11857792019-08-08T16:38:17.337ZHughhttps://harringayonline.com/profile/hjuk

There was some confusion initially because no warning was given and no information nor signage was provided about temporary two-way operation of the road.

Once that wee hurdle was surmounted, the experience has been a tantalising glimpse of how things could be.

in the ordinary course of events, our road is no longer as awful as it once was, but there's still a regular hum of traffic. Now, all of a sudden, peace reigns.

Another outcome of the closure has been parking. Recent Ladder parking surveys parking have shown that our road has near 0% free space in the evenings and overnight. It's quite odd because it all changed very suddenly about two years or so ago. We went from a situation where parking was reasonable to one where it became almost impossible to find a parking space after 5 or 6. With the road closure, suddenly it's back to how it used to be. I can only think that this means the excess parking comes from people who don't live in our road.

You'd think that all this upside would come at a price of inconvenience to vehicular traffic. If it has, it's been very well hidden from me. Residents have managed just fine executing a three-point turn on arrival or departure. Deliveries by van have continued unabated, the milk still lands on the doorstep, the Veolia carts have still come and gone and we've even had large lorries delivering: this morning a huge earth-moving truck arrived to dump fill on a two-metre square hole dug by Carillion (I've no idea why such a huge lorry was required for such a small hole, but it proved that a large vehicle was able to navigate the current set-up). Yesterday a long scaffolding lorry came to retrieve some scaffolding, apparently without any problem.

Litter seems to have reduced and the dumping spot at the bottom of the road has been strangely empty.

So life has gone on, apparently with little disruption. And for the duration, it's been an absolute pleasure for many of us. The street is quieter, cleaner and emptier.

It's tempting to ask, if it's so easy to close one end of the road and for life to go on so smoothly, why can't this be made permanent across all rung roads?

I'm expecting comments by people who haven't enjoyed their own road closure for one reason or another and for others flagging-up of issues I've overlooked.

Anyone else had the same reaction as me?
Cycling, Wightman Road, Burgoyne Roadtag:harringayonline.com,2019-08-02:844301:Topic:11845242019-08-02T11:11:04.692ZLaurahttps://harringayonline.com/profile/Laura

This has appeared at the top of Burgoyne Road. Burgoyne Road is top down, or one way; entrance from Wightman Road, exit on Green Lanes if you prefer.

There are many things wrong with this paint. The most important thing is that is its VERY dangerous to encourage cyclists to take these positions on this already dodgy infrastructure.

I'll start the list, please add:

- position of painted cycle on road for cyclists going east is 100% in the wrong place; will encourage under-taking of cycle by motor traffic

- motor traffic will NOT expect a cyclist in this position

- poor sight lines for motor traffic turning into Burgoyne Road from north or south; it's particularly bad for traffic turning into Burgoyne from Finsbury Park direction

- there's no signage that I can see to tell motor traffic to expect cyclists in a contra-flow

- not that drivers pay attention to signs anyway

I wouldn't fancy my chances turning right (or left for that matter) out of Burgoyne onto Wightman.

Was this on any of the plans? I'll check but I don't remember it. It's a confusing, congested, poor managed spot already.

SIGH

Hi all,

Is it just me or has Wightman Road now become an absolute death trap for us cyclists with the jutty out bits that enrage car drivers who swerve into us to avoid oncoming cars...?

Thinking a cycle track on part of pavement could be an answer... We don't take up as much space as a car parking half way across the pavement as it used to be...

Dear all,

This morning we walked along Wightman Road towards the train station and the pollution was unbearable. We noticed cars breaking hard when approaching the narrowing bays (drivers seem genuinely surprised by those bays) and then reaccelerating once they wiggled their way through them. Also we saw drivers not moving past the bay as they seemed concerned about the width and hitting oncoming traffic.
The changes the council is making seem to cause all sorts of serious problems such as deteriorating road safety, build up of traffic and worsening air pollution.

What can we do about this?

Cheers

Has anyone else noticed the appalling work done by the contractors at the Duckett's end of Hampden Road? They've removed the dropped curbs and replaced them with (dangerous if you're blind or disabled) high curbs. Maybe then realising their error, they've subsequently bodged a repair by piling up a ramp of ugly tarmac at each side. That's our tax dollars well spent, eh?…
