Very sorry to see that one of the beautiful pink flowering mature cherry trees is going to be felled on Sydney Road. I certainly hope it will be replaced.

A further tree has been identified as requiring removal this is located outside 40 Umfreville Road N4.

The tree has been colonised by decay fungi (Ganoderma) which has compromised the structural integrity. This is a serious structural defect. Ganoderma species cause extensive decay of the lower trunk and root plate making the trees structurally unsound with the potential to fail at or near ground level. There is no treatment, or ways to prevent the acceleration of the decay. Most ornamental trees do not respond well to decay and once colonised, their stability can weaken rapidly and this often leads to them failing in high winds. Colonisation by Ganoderma fungi is the most common cause of street trees failing in the borough.
Three more Ladder tree removalstag:harringayonline.com,2023-12-02:844301:Topic:15599672023-12-02T09:42:35.729ZHoL Site Adminhttps://harringayonline.com/profile/SiteAdmin

The trees have been colonised by decay fungi (Ganoderma) and have other defects which has compromised the structural integrity. These are all serious structural defects.

The ornamental street trees are scheduled to be inspected every four years, so on occasions a number of trees may have to be removed at the same time.

The fungal fruiting bodies usually only appear after the trunk or branch are substantially decayed. Ornamental trees do not respond well to decay and once colonised, their stability can weaken rapidly.. Examples of these are illustrated below. All three trees had the same decay fungi. We can upon request supply the images of the fungus on each of the three trees listed above these are already detailed in the resident letter drop.

Trees identified with decay fungi or other major defects cannot be safely retained on the public highway where the risk of damage or injury is high. Unfortunately, in situations like this, removal is the only option. It is regrettable when mature trees have to be removed, however, the Council has a duty of care with regards to trees and must take action where hazards are evident to minimise the risk to people and property.

A new Urban Forest Plan is currently being developed and this will outline where and when new trees will be planted going forward.

The council has launched a new tree sponsorship scheme, which has been set up with an external partner; Trees for Streets. If you wish to sponsor trees in your road please register the interest in sponsoring a tree at the link below.

Having the support of so many others who share our concern for the urgency of protecting and prioritising our mature trees is uplifting and energising - thank you for your support which makes is possible to take the action forward.

At the moment the hearing on 15th March is going ahead. LB of Haringey have not confirmed how they intend to proceed following the service or a large amount of evidence by the non-party insurers. The concern is that the council is taking steps to be in a position to fell the tree if the hearing next Wednesday concludes in their favour. We need to make sure that we have the funds in place to enable our great legal team (Richard Buxton Solicitors and Paul Powesland @ Garden Court Chambers - both offering their services as reduced fees) to take the fight as far as possible.

What you can do to help:

Email 3 friends the campaign page link, telling them why you think is important and asking them to pledge and / or to spread the word

Post the link to Facebook / your other social media, asking friends and followers to pledge and / or spread the word

Tweet in support.

Talk about the campaign and the issue, and why its important to you in your social and work cricles;;-)

Despite vague promises from McDonalds to rectify their actions, there still aren't any new trees and the environmentally nasty platic grass is still there.

It seems they have gotten away with removing all those mature trees last year which were happily sucking up carbon, providing shade and housing wildlife.

A couple of weeks ago I shared the sad news that the ancient looking horse chestnut on Green Lanes, opposite Falkland Road, was to be cut down. I wondered aloud about its age.

Yesterday it met its maker. Before it went completely, I'd arranged with the very helpful Haringey trees team to collect a slice of the tree for dating. My notions of daintily counting tree rings proved to be unrealistic. As you can see from the photo, the chainsaw marks rendered them invisible. A neighbour said to me that you could get a pretty good idea of a tree's age through measurements. The wisdom of the web seemed to agree.

To take full account of a tree's age, apparently, you're supposed to measure the girth of a standing specimen at chest-height. Since the stump was still above head height when I collected my slice, it was certainly higher than that, which means it would tend to underestimate the full age of the tree. The girth of the slice I got was 120 inches. Using two different web calculators, which both allow for species differences, i was given an age of 305 years. Whilst it's wise to treat that age with caution, the arboriculturist who was supervising the felling on Green Lanes told me he thought the tree was well over 200 years old. So, it sounds about right.

300 years, give or take, puts the tree as having been a seedling in around 1720. So, it seems like it was, as I'd suspected an old field boundary tree, planted less than 200 years after the species was first introduced to Britain. 1720 was the year before Robert Walpole became the first Prime Minister of Great Britain. It was a half century before the American Revolution. It was seventy years before the old Queen's Head was first established as an old coaching inn. The tree, let's make no bones about it, was a very old one.

The tree's offspring, or sibling is still standing, a little further north, also in front of Mountview Court. It too is of a venerable age, especially for this part of London. Next time I pass by, I'll doff my cap and wonder how big it was the year Victoria ascended to the throne.
