Transport for London and National Rail today (May 14) launched a consultation on Crossrail 2 – a proposed high-capacity rail line to link north east and south east London.

Crossrail 2, which is supported by the council, the Mayor of London and not-for-profit business group London First, would provide faster trains into the capital for Haringey’s growing population and bolster regeneration work across the borough.

Two possible routes have been identified – an underground ‘metro’ option from Wimbledon to Alexandra Palace, and a ‘regional’ option that would link to more National Rail stations and extend north into Hertfordshire.

Haringey Council is asking residents to support the ‘regional’ option, as they say that it would create two new rail branches to Alexandra Palace and Tottenham, offering new routes through the borough that would boost trade and tourism.

The ‘metro’ option, they explain, would use smaller trains, provide just one route to the east of the borough and not offer a direct link to a regenerated Tottenham and the rest of the Lee Valley.

Haringey Council Leader Claire Kober said “Crossrail 2 would transform travel for local residents to south-west London and beyond, and I urge them to make their voices heard through this consultation and send a clear message that this is the right route for Haringey.”

The consultation runs until August 2.

Vibrations on the Goblin Line

I am pleased to confirm that I met this week with representatives from Network Rail. The meeting was a constructive one, and Network Rail appear open to agreeing a period of vibration monitoring similar to that taking place in Walthamstow. In order to ensure that any testing that is carried out is as comprehensive as possible, I will be issuing a survey in the N4 area allowing us to see which roads and properties are experiencing vibrations from the Goblin Line. In addition, Network Rail have set up a specific email by which you can notify them of your experiences. As I am sure many of you are aware, the Goblin line has long been causing problems for residents in N4, and the recent increase in freight traffic has made matters worse. Living in the area myself I am all to aware of just how disruptive the noise and vibration can be, so it it vital that we are able to provide Network Rail with as detailed description of disruption as possible. A public meeting with the manager of the Anglia Line is scheduled for December 3rd. In the meantime, I will be distributing a survey in the affected area and will make sure you are kept informed of any updates.
Political support for Barking – Gospel Oak Electrification Growstag:harringayonline.com,2012-08-14:844301:Topic:3973192012-08-14T14:48:39.978ZHughhttps://harringayonline.com/profile/hjuk

Contactless payments on the transport network are to be delayed by a year, meaning the service won't be fully active on the Tube until the end of 2013.

The "Wave and Pay" system, which enables travellers to pay for Tube or services simply by automatically debiting a bank card rather than relying on Oyster, was meant to be substantially integrated into London transport by the end of 2012, according to a Transport for London (TfL) statement in February.

The admitted delays confirm what was already hinted at in Boris Johnson's 2012 "Investing In Transport" May election manifesto, which stated, "I will start [contactless payment's] introduction on the bus network in June this year as a means of paying cash fares. I will launch contactless payment with Pay As You Go and weekly capping on the Tube and other rail services towards the end of 2013."

As part of plan to relieve congestion on public transport over the next twenty years, planners are considering a Crossrail 2.

Option 1 of the so-called Chelsea-Hackney line would see a new route linking Ally Pally, Wood Green and Seven Sisters with Angel, Tottenham Court Road and Chelsea.

Option 2 would skirt our part of the world in favour of a more suburban route north of Hackney.

At a recent meeting (25th June) at Waltham Forest Town Hall, representatives from the Barking – Gospel Oak Line User Group called upon Transport for London to agree to run the daytime 15-minute train frequency to the end of service with a weekday start on Sunday mornings when the<p">Games are in session.

On 2nd to the Barking – Gospel Oak Line in an attempt to avoid packed trains and gridlocked streets.Instead, they will find trains already packed at peak times and long waits for equally busy trains after 10 O’clock at night.”

Now BGOLUG has learnt that a vital morning commuter train, only put on last summer to relieve overcrowding is to be cancelled during the Olympic Games.

It seems that the proposed electrification of the line that runs through Harringay Green Lanes Station (the Barking to Gospel Oak line) has failed to make the cut in the most recent rail investment spending round.

Yesterday Dave and Nick announced £9 billion of rail infrastructure spending at their so called "second gay wedding" (I like to think of more as a renewal of marriage vows). Since it was a key part of Boris Johnson's manifesto, it had been hoped that further investment in Harringay's second line was to have been included in the spending portfolio. But it seems that this was not to be.

The works would have seen electricity powered trains able to run the length of the new Overground Line, removing the need to change trains at Gospel Oak where the electrification currently starts. The proposed link-up with the Great Northern Line at Harringay is also to be shelved for the time being.

I'm currently unaware of the reasoning, but a quick look at the proposals published last September (attached) suggests that it may well have been a cost issue. At between £69 - 80M, it was by far the most expensive item on the list of proposed projects in London and the South East (Proposals for the BGO line work and the costings are also attached as extracts).

So, for the time being at least, it looks like the only rail works we're likely to see on the Harringay Green Lanes line will be the addition of a few hooks on Harringay Bridge so that we can get the banner hung.
