So much for community involvement! An about turn agreeing with developers that they could replace with saplings. These mature trees have captured years of carbon and made Haringey cleaner.

Please note Hakata's hypocrisy of blocking our surrounding roads with miles of polluting traffic since the ill planned LTNs were introduced locally thereby creating more pollution for residents whilst claiming LTNs create pollution free communities. One solution for one area is not a solution for all.

So why agree to 167 new car spaces at the St Ann's development? Crazy ..inviting new owners and tenants to contribute to Haringey's pollution?

Does Hakata understand ANYTHING about planning and traffic management? What are his qualifications to do this?
School Streets in Haringey: Sign the Petitiontag:harringayonline.com,2020-10-20:844301:Topic:13185212020-10-20T20:59:32.106ZBurgoyne Bechttps://harringayonline.com/profile/RebeccaPaton

Drivers in Haringey who leave their engines running while their cars are at a standstill could be fined to help cut traffic pollution.

Penalties of £20 (£40 if not paid within 28 days) will be issued to drivers in Haringey who refuse to turn off their engines when told to do so by an enforcement officer.

In a welcome move approved at a meeting of Haringey’s cabinet last week, will change driver behaviour and help to reduce pollution.

Under road traffic regulations, whilst drivers are allowed to leave their engines running when it is deemed necessary, such as while queuing at traffic lights and defrosting windscreens, leaving the engine running unnecessarily while a car is at a standstill is an offence

But in some situations – such as leaving an engine running while parked outside a school waiting for children – they are committing an offence.

Under the measures agreed by the council, an enforcement officer will warn drivers who are caught idling and give them a chance to switch off their engines. If the driver refuses, they will be given a £20 fixed penalty notice.

The council has previously had the power to crack down on engine idling but doing so was not considered “the most cost-effective means of reducing air pollution”.

That is because few FPNs were issued in boroughs that chose to enforce anti-idling measures.

Council papers say the anti-idling charge is “unlikely to have significant effect on air quality by itself”.

But idling was the most talked-about problem among people who responded to a consultation on the council’s air quality action plan.

One in ten respondents wanted stricter enforcement measures around schools and other common places for idling.

This is a welcome move, but will it have much effect?

Many may have seen this already - appears like Hala is planning to take over China City and go from double to triple fronted. Apart from the obvious issue of the increasing homogeneity of our high street, and the fact that the triple format will contravene planning policy we also know that Hala contributes substantially to pollution in the area - as discussed recently, and caught on video.

There appears to be no planning submission relating to this - which would of course be required if they decide to merge the premises, so it may be a good time to get the authorities on the case.

Apart from this it's quite unbelievable that this continues to happen.

There are 2 other case studies - Sira and Diyarbakir (who apparently are appealing against the refusal for a triple-fronted extension.)

This warrants proper engagement with the council - not least because there are clear planning parameters and these opportunistic merchants of identikit cuisine appear hell bent on bending the rules.

Oral history will pass the story of where forebears were the evening the Great Smog wrapped itself around Harringay for generations to come.

Here are first hand images for posterity. The first is the view down Pemberton on a clear night, the second showing the plume of smoke coming from the extractor at Devran.

I actually had conversations with neighbours who had come out to see if something was on fire (I spoke to at least 4). The smoke was creeping into our drafty Victorian houses and filling our rooms. What was interesting was that the smoke was more of a wood smoke smell, not the normal BBQ smell. The industrial levels of smoke settling around us could not have been from a single house hold with wet wood in its fire though, it must have come from elsewhere.

Once inside our clothes stank and went straight into the wash, it was like bonfire nights of old!

You may have heard there has been a horrible dump of dirty oil into the River Lea, which first spread from Enfield to Shoreditch. Advice here on what to do if you meet one of the many injured birds that got covered in the oil. Please pass on to all you know who walk or cycle along the canal or river.

Birds cope well with the cold, as long as their feathers are in good condition, and they have a good food supply. The recent oil spill has degraded their feathers, stripping the natural oils that keep the birds buoyant, and warm. For this reason they will be trying to keep off the water and get dry. Waterlogged feathers provide no insulation and will quickly lead to hypothermia. There will be many smaller birds suffering greatly, it may not be immediately obvious they have a problem if they have dried out, but they will not be able to access their normal food supply. Coots and moorhen are very difficult to catch. Unless you are positive you can catch them*, please do not chase them and force them on the water, as they will become stressed and wet and waste the scant resources they have. Best to leave them undisturbed if possible, and provide a shallow dish of water and food. Suitable foods are grains and seeds (wheat, oats etc) brown seedy bread, moistened is best. Swan and duck pellets if clean water available. Meal-worms or 'buggy pellets'. Coots and moorhen poke about in water weed for insects, so if you are able to put uncontaminated weed where they can access it without getting on the water, that would be perfect.

*If anyone catches a contaminated bird, please put it in a secure box with bedding, in a warm, quiet place, and call me on 07970 404 866, I will collect it and take to The Swan Sanctuary. Geese cope much better without access to the water. Their main food supply is grazing, and they tend to be in family groups or pairs, which provides better protection from predators. Due to their status under the Wildlife and Countryside Act, Canada and Egyptian geese cannot be returned to the wild after rehabilitation. For these two reasons they are usually only taken in to care if they are in poor or life threatening condition because of the oil. But please call me if you see a goose you are concerned about. Generally speaking, if the goose is on the water and it is not lower than usual, and it appears unstressed, it is OK even if it looks 'grubby'. If the bird is paddling furiously, or the water is consistently meeting over it's back so the neck appears disconnected from the body, he is water-logged and requires help.

Can't make it to the Haringey council's meetings, today & tomorrow, about air quality. I'm told by the Haringey Cycle Campaign that what the Council has in mind is getting people to switch to electric cars. That would mean no near-term action on air quality - people don't replace their cars in a hurry - and, even if it were successful, the electric cars would still clog our streets, discouraging both bus use and active transit, using an unsustainable level of energy (call me about electric cars when the electricity supply is fully carbon neutral), and polluting air (and oceans) with particulates from tires and brakes.

Meanwhile, Living Wightman - a group founded on enthusiasm born of the closure of Wightman Road to through traffic while a bridge was being replaced - alerts me to a plan by Haringey Council to funnel more traffic through their road. Words about electric cars, action to increase motor traffic, does that sum up our air quality policy?

The plan Living Wightman objects to is in connection with a plan for new development in Wood Green. There is no excuse for this - Wood Green is a major transit hub, and the new development is occasioned by anticipation of Crossrail 2, which will make it an even greater hub. As it stands, the huge number of bus lines serving the area are slowed by excessive private motor traffic. Diverting some of that traffic onto a parallel road for a short while won't solve the problem - it will just generate more traffic, which will all come back to clog bus routes somewhere else. And, of course, it will pollute the air and discourage active transport (cycling and walking). So this is overall disaster.

Since I can't get to these meetings I've written a case for why we should be focusing on an overall reduction in road traffic. That can be found on my blog here.
