Further to the post last week about making the passage a greener space for us all to enjoy, I am increasingly seeing a dog (sometimes human) poo problem in the passage. No doubt this has been addressed previously, but I am keen to look at new initiatives to highlight the issue and hopefully change the behaviour of ignorant dog owners.

I am prepared to create some posters (see attached) that I will post at the entrance to the alleyway(s) from Allison Road to Pemberton Road. This is the route I walk my kids to school at 7:50 each morning. I will arm myself with some chalk based yellow spray paint and will make a point of highlighting the mess each morning. My hope is that the yellow posters and yellow highlighted mess can lead to a positive change in behaviour. Should this work we could roll it out to the wider area of the passage.

I am keen to hear the groups thoughts on this and perhaps whether my ideas could play into a wider initiative which is already being considered.

Hi all,

I recently came across a really inspiring story about a group of residents in Liverpool who transformed the alleyway behind their houses into a green and beautiful space. See the facebook link below for info and pictures. There's a similar project in Middlesborough.

I know that Harringay Passage isn't quite the same as this; none of us have back yards/gardens that open onto the passage.

However, I wonder if many of us could come together, and come up with ideas to make the passage a brighter, greener and more inviting space to walk through? The section nearest to me, between Fairfax and Effingham, happens to be the widest - so lots of opportunity to make it nicer.

Also - I wondered if ideas such as this had been discussed / tried before?

Best,

What does HoL think about joggers using the passage? I find it so worrying that I have become uncomfortable walking much through the passage at the moment, despite it being otherwise a haven from the traffic of Green Lanes and Wightman Road.

The passage is a little less than 2m wide, and, although open to the skies, quite an enclosed space, so good social distancing is not really possible. Most people walking quietly through it are currently careful to allow others to leave before they enter, and to pass one another as distantly as possible. That doesn't happen with joggers. Breathing heavily, they come at a pace that leaves no option of avoiding uncomfortably close contact. And research about how long the virus remains in the air after it has been breathed out, whether as droplets or aerosol, even outdoors, remains unclear and far from reassuring.

How joggers behave towards other pavement users can't easily be regulated - although maybe it's worth noting that, in April, the city of Paris simply banned all such outdoor exercise between 10am and 7pm, as a safety measure and it may yet come. But perhaps common sense and social consensus might make a difference meanwhile? Maybe it is worth saying something to joggers? This morning, possibly rashly, I spoke to two I met in the passage. One, pleasant and responsive, said he was aware of the problem and tried not to enter the passage when other users were present. The other was merely aggressive and abusive.

I'd be really interested to know what other HoL users think about this? I'd also be interested to know if there are joggers choosing not to use the passage at the moment, perhaps because they've become aware of how much concern and even alarm their appearance raises in other users? And of course also I'd be interested in reasoning from joggers who continue to use it regardless.
Keys found in the passage this morningtag:harringayonline.com,2018-10-17:844301:Topic:11267882018-10-17T09:55:39.515Zadamvietnamhttps://harringayonline.com/profile/adamvietnam

Just want to moan really; for several hours this afternoon there has been a group of seven people at the bottom of Beresford Road just, basically, partying. You know, chatting shit and such. They've got their balloons and their cannisters and their spliffs, the car doors are all open and they're having a fun time for a Friday afternoon. Meanwhile the children are coming home from school, people are out and about doing their shopping or coming back from work, leading what I would call normal…

I find it depressing that people feel so untouchable they can hang out on ladder streets doing what they want.

In the same afternoon, I've just seen open dealing, buying and using in the passage. I suspect from the state of the three men sitting down, there was spice involved.

No, I didn't call the police.

When the snow stops we have 18 snow shovels dotted about the ladder for clearing snow from the passage and possibly pavements. Half of them are in the magic storage shed at North Harringay School. I've not been well the past two days so was hoping to stay inside warm but do we have any volunteers, other than the people who have shovels already?

We had a meeting of the Friends of the Harringay Passage yesterday and we touched on the issue of dog poo (it came top as the top issue in the Ladder wide survey the FoHP recently carried out).

I saw a post a few weeks ago here on HoL about the fact that by April next year, micro-chipping of dogs will be mandatory.

It made me think that it would be good to also include DNA profiling of all dogs now that this technology is so easily accessible, and for this to be stored centrally and on a the micro-chip. Basically, we have an issue with dog poo, dog poo can be DNA tested to the animal producing it (and the feckless owner leaving it), indeed councils are trialing this now. If we could make fines representative of the actual cost of enforcement rather than a cost to the council then there would also be an incentive to councils to do more to rid our streets of this mess that we and our children have to wade through on a daily basis.

They were bring very careful not to sit on the plants. We had a little chat, and apparently they live on Hewitt, and were making their way from Sainsbury's and were pausing for a moment to catch their breath. They have apparently lived on Hewitt for 60 years. I can only imagine the stories they have to tell.

It was a lovely moment in a busy day.

Earlier in the year a friends group for the Harringay Passage was formed, to focus on the passage and how it might be improved. The council have kindly agreed to help us do this because they are keen to see how much support there is for different initiatives, but before designing the questionnaire it we'd very much like to hear other local people's views so that we can make sure we're asking the right questions.

A couple of us kicked this off yesterday at the play street on Pemberton Road and got some really useful feedback but it would be great to hear what HOL readers think as well. The key things we're interested in at this stage are what people like and don't like about the passage at the moment and what they think would improve it. So, for example:

Positive factors people mentioned yesterday included how convenient it is, the fact that there is no traffic, that it links to two schools etc.
Negative ones were ... drum roll... dog poo, litter and not always feeling safe.
Ideas for making it better included more thorough cleaning, looking at the layout at the road/passage junctions, planters on each street, painting the existing bollards and pipes, and street art.

Let us know what you think. And if you'd like to know more about the Friends of Harringay Passage group drop us a line at info.fohp@gmail.com or come to our monthly meeting (third Wednesday of every month at 7pm at the Falkland Centre).
