Am I alone in dreading a visit to the parking shop in Wood Green. It's easier (and pleasanter) to borrow money from a bank than buy a permit to park outside my own house!

Lib Dem Councillor for Stroud Green, Richard Wilson, reports on his blog this week the good news that Oyster pre-pay in finally working at Harringay (And therefore we can assume Hornsey).
But there's a sting in the tail for folks who want to use the facility to travel out beyond Zone 3.
So, it’s finally happening. Six-and-a-half long years after it was first introduced on the Tube and buses, Oyster pay-as-you-go will be introduced on London’s National Rail routes from 2 January, it was confirmed on Monday. Two cheers – as mayor Boris Johnson quite rightly said, “After what feels like eons of negotiation and much gnashing of Londoners’ teeth we can finally announce the Oysterisation of all London’s rail services. Very often when I travel now I use my pay-as-you-go Oyster, but since I wanted to use Harringay station yesterday I bought a one-day travel card at the ticket office there (payg cards are not yet valid for travel to & from there).

After my morning at the self-consciously funky King's Cross Hub, I arrived back at King's Cross tube station on tube autopilot, and touched in with my payg. Daggnabbit, I've got a 1-day I realised. So I immediately touched out again and re-entered using my 1-day, thinking that it at least would be some basis on which I could claim a refund. Awa' with the faeries!

So I got on the tube, and then got off at St James's and went and did the same thing again.....at which point I gave up hope of ever getting a refund.

This morning I took a look at my Oyster A/C online and found that since I had an incomplete journey, I ended up being charged £8 yesterday. What a waste. So, in optimistic mood, I rang Oyster and was delighted to find them polite, helpful and understanding and quite ready to give me my refund if I could fax or email them a scan of my 1 day pass (not even a demand for the original to be posted). I imagine they've looked at my history, seen a long period of regular activity, accepted I made an honest mistake and have been ready to refund me without quibble or argument - as good as the M&S refund desk (but I'm sure they checked whether I'd worn the frock the night before!).

After putting the phone down, I reflected that this wasn't the first time. I think I can say that on every occasion that I've contacted them, they've been polite, very human, efficient and helpful. Good for you TfL; good for you Oyster Team. In a world where contacting any type of customer service is a nightmare of digital options and automoton jobsworths, you're a breath of fresh air. When's the next London's unsung heroes award?

PS: In the belief that good feedback should be fed back, I've paused sending my 1-day pass copy in so that I can send them in a copy of this posting on my email.
Questions or Gripes about Harringay Rail Services?

Local residents in Haringey will have to wait an extra four months after a train company broke promises last week on introducing Oyster Pay As You Go (PAYG) on local trains. First Capital Connect (FCC), which runs the Overground train line north of Finsbury Park, recently agreed that train users would be able to use PAYG from September this year; but this has now been delayed until at least January 2010.

The disappointing news comes following a long running campaign spearheaded by Hornsey and Wood Green MP Lynne Featherstone, that culminated in assurances from Transport for London, Mayor Boris Johnson and First Capital Connect that local trains would ‘go Oyster’ by September 2009. Lynne has now written to the three organisations demanding an explanation for the delays and an apology to local residents for the extra wait.
Overground oyster system off limits until 2010tag:harringayonline.com,2009-05-09:844301:Topic:1084652009-05-09T09:38:45.115ZHughhttps://harringayonline.com/profile/hjuk
That's the call from Hornsey and Wood Green MP Lynne Featherstone, who last week blasted rail operator First Capital Connect for dragging its feet over extending Oyster Card facilities north of Finsbury Park station.

She likened needing separate tickets to travel in the same city to Soviet-style bureaucracy.

Other train operators including First Great Western and South West Trains have already committed to installing the Oyster pay-as-you-go system in under 12 months.

Ms Featherstone visited Alexandra Palace station with Oyster specialists Cubic, a principal partner in the consortium that runs the system. She said: "Local residents have had empty promise after empty promise - enough is enough. Needing separate tickets for travel in the same city is reminiscent of a Soviet bureaucracy not a world class city like London.

"I want First Capital Connect and TfL to accelerate discussions and reach agreement sooner rather than later. The people of Haringey deserve this service and I will be calling for talks with First Capital Connect."

A First Capital Connect spokesman replied: "We are working with TfL to implement Oyster pay as you go, and we hope to sign an agreement on this over the summer. We will then move onto the physical implementation of the equipment and technology throughout London. We are keen to achieve this as soon as possible.
