I have received the following statement from the Council this morning:

Cabinet met on 19th July 2011 to consider the proposal to close Broadwater Lodge, Cranwood and The Red House Older People’s residential care homes and Whitehall Street for adults with learning disabilities.

We regret to inform you that following careful consideration and much sadness Cabinet decided to close the homes.

We very much regret that we have been forced to take these decisions as a result of unprecedented government imposed cuts.

We are really sorry if this was not the decision you were hoping for.

We will be meeting shortly with users, relatives and carers to discuss what happens next. We know this is an anxious and potentially upsetting time for residents but until we can meet face to face please rest assured that the homes are not due to close until 2012 (Whitehall Street) and 2013 (Broadwater Lodge, Cranwood and The Red House). Residents at care homes affected by the closures, and their families, will be given every possible support in identifying another suitable care home to move to. This will be handled in a careful, humane and sensitive manner with plenty of time to consider an appropriate placement - thereby minimising distress and disruption to a person’s care.

Please be assured that anyone receiving respite care will continue to receive respite care, a full assessment and review of their care plan, and an alternative, high quality residential placement found which fully meets both theirs and the needs of their carer - in terms of both quality and appropriate geographical location.

We would like to reiterate that vulnerable adults assessed as needing a service will continue to receive such a service which the Council will buy for them. We are working hard with other providers, notably in the voluntary and independent sectors, to ensure that vulnerable adults continue to receive the care they require.
Watch special cabinet decision on older people's centres live at 3.30tag:harringayonline.com,2011-06-30:844301:Topic:2591612011-06-30T13:47:57.117ZHughhttps://harringayonline.com/profile/hjuk

If the internet can enable grandparents to read stories to their grandchildren from afar, then why not use similar technology to improve literacy and education around the globe? That, indeed, is the premise behind an initiative launched by Sugata Mitra, .

On a trip to India a few years ago, Sugata Mitra, a professor of education technology at Newcastle University asked children there what they would most like to use Skype for. “Surprisingly, they said they wanted British grandmothers to read them fairytales — they’d even worked out that between them they could afford to pay £1 a week out of their own money,” Accordingly, Mitra put out a call for UK grannies to do just that, and some 200 volunteers responded. “Many are retired teachers, who are now regularly on Skype teaching children in the slums,” Mitra explained.

Since then, the project — known officially as “SOLE and SOME” but unofficially as the “Granny Cloud” — has expanded from incorporating volunteers just for storytelling to using them more as educational mentors. “This is the group of SOME volunteers that is emerging — a group of people who would make themselves available over Skype for, say, one hour a week,” explains the project’s site. The session would then be led by a mediator, and involve conversation, stories and singing.

Mitra's work is perhaps best known for inspiring the film “Slumdog Millionaire”. More at an article from last year in The Guardian.

Prospective volunteers are encouraged to contact the project to get involved.

The list will recognise these individuals for the extraordinary achievements and contributions that they continue to make. It will include people in the public eye across a range of areas including science, business, the arts and show business.

One of the most important categories will recognise local unsung heroes who are making communities across the UK a great place to grow old. It's our way of saying thank you for the hard work they contribute every day – and we want your nominations!

They could be a WRVS volunteer who is involved in many other local activities that really make a difference, or someone you know who makes a big impact to their local area, perhaps they have organised initiatives that have improved your community, or play a leading role in the local organisations that make a real difference to where you live.

A panel of experts will then come together in the summer and judge your nominations, alongside those in the public eye, to create our final list of the 66 most influential people over the age of 66.

So if there's an unsung hero in your area let us know by using the form below to nominate. Just tell us who they are and why you want to recognise them. What better way to say thank you!
