<p>I recently wrote a <a href="https://www.harringayonline.com/group/historyofharringay/forum/topics/haringey-park-one-and-three-quarter-centuries-of-change" target="_blank" rel="noopener">piece on HoL about the history of Haringey Park</a>, That included mention of Park Chapel which overlooks the west end of the road. In researching that piece, I learned that in 1974 the congregational church which had built and occupied the building since 1855 joined with Ferme Park Baptist Church to form Union Church, Crouch End. They moved to the newly built church on the corner of Weston Park and Ferme Park.</p>
<p>Following that change, the Park Chapel building was split in two. It is well-known that half was eventually bought by Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics and was used in the recording of the hit album <em>Sweet Dreams</em>. But I hadn't realised that the southern half of the building continued in use as a church. Today is is occupied as the <em>Mount Zion Cathedral</em>. </p>

<p>From what I can see, it is a church used by Londoners of African descent. The <a href="https://www.localprayers.com/GB/London/739555326186826/Mount-Zion-Crouch-End" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Local Prayers website</a> offers the following.</p>
<blockquote><p>Cherubim and Seraphim church based in Crouch end hornsey. Working to the glory of God.</p>
<p>Eternal Sacred Order of Cherubim and Seraphim church is a registered charity whose principal aim is to promote and advance Christian Fellowship. Provision of Christian literature in relation to the Holy Bible, support families facing hardship, offer holiday and recreation for children and families of all races and sexes.</p>
<p><b>Mission:</b> The promotion and advancement of inter nation Christian fellowship and specially the principles relating to the Holy Bible.</p>
</blockquote>
<p></p>
<p>In 2004 the studio half of the building was sold to music artist David Gray. In 2013, Gray decided to sell and the Church seemed under threat of falling into the hands of property developers. As things turned out, UK Producer Paul Epworth was on the hunt for a studio facility and a sale was agreed in October 2013.</p>

<div>HTH is about to be sold off to a $2bn Cayman-Islands registered developer and we only have until Tuesday to make any objections known. So if you come to our event, we'll have three days to convince peolpe to make their feelings known.</div>
<div>The walk ends in a brief meeting inside HTH where we can show you what the principal objections are and how you can comment on the planning application:</div>

<div>(This image is of a relief by Arthur Ayres above the old Gas showroom in the Town Hall square, which featured as the sculpture of the month in February 2016 on the <a href="http://www.speel.me.uk/sculptlondon/hornsey.htm" target="_blank">second website of Bob Speel.</a> These chaps seem actually to be thinking about what they are doing.)</div>
<div><div> </div>
<div>We've had lots of damaging, costly plans for HTH in the past and all have come to nothing. As well as gutting the interior, the developer stands to make a £22m profit from 146 luxury flats in the car park. This is an increase on the last madcap scheme that came to nothing. Worse, the affordable housing provision has been cynically reduced to ZERO percent - #HTHbaddeal.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Here's a video to give some idea of what we'll have to live with from the flats alone:</div>

<div>Please join us and show your support for a better future for the centre of our town. At least one local group (<a href="http://www.hthas.org.uk/a-community-interest-company">http://www.hthas.org.uk/a-community-interest-company</a>) has a credible plan and enough strong local people to provide a better future - let us help get the views and ideas of local people taken seriously.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>The <a href="http://www.whpra.com/">Weston and Haringey Parks Association</a>, the <a href="http://www.crouchendforum.org.uk/hornsey-town-hall-comments-arising-from-the-public-meeting/">Crouch End Neighbourhood Forum</a> and the <a href="https://www.crouchendfestival.org/">Crouch End Festival</a> are among many local groups concerned enough to campaign for a better deal. The Forum has a handy <a href="http://www.crouchendforum.org.uk/hornsey-town-hall-comments-arising-from-the-public-meeting/">guide to objecting</a>.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>We want to not only preserve the Arts Centre but enhance it. A plan that does not evict 130 small business people from the Town Hall but uses their revenue (and the £4m restoration grant available) to offset costs. A plan that does not see a large car park in our 100% publically-owned £150m campus sold off to 146 buy-to-leave investors, each paying around £1m per flat. <a href="https://www.bigissue.com/news/sadiq-khan-announces-new-100-affordable-housing-development-london/">City Hall is buying up land, finding lots of developers keen to build 100% affordable housing on it</a> whilst our Council is selling it off to provide zero because the huge developer claims that £22m profit is the minimum they will accept.</div>

<div>Please get a free ticket here (helps us manage numbers): <a href="http://bit.ly/hthrtkts">bit.ly/hthrtkts</a></div>
<div> </div>
<div>Be really nice, if you can make it, if you would lend a hand. It's a simple, straightforward, modest event that would be enriched by a whole host of things you could help with if you have time.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Ideas for slogans, making a few placards, being a steward, promoting via email, twitter, on FB, speaking at the meeting, doing some slides, recording the event via photos, videos, leading the procession - whatever you would feel most comfortable doing, ideally so it is thoroughly enjoyable for you. Doesn't happen every day.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Even if you don't fancy too much joining in, it'd be lovely to see you join a select band of people showing that we do care about our town centre, so please book your place in the history of Crouch End and get a free ticket: <a href="http://bit.ly/hthrtkts">bit.ly/hthrtkts</a></div>

<p class="p1">A group of Crouch End residents and businesses has been meeting regularly over the past 9 months to discuss how to develop the basis of an official '<em>neighbourhood forum</em>' and put together a plan which will benefit the Crouch End community.</p>
<p class="p2"><span class="s1">Neighbourhood Forums are authorised under the new Localism agenda established in 2011, and the central concept is that local communities, including businesses, should have a greater say in planning decisions affecting their local area. In addition Neighbourhood Forums can initiate their own planning and other policies for their neighbourhood. Examples might include action on new rented housing, analysing the retail mix in the town centre, ensuring that conservation guidelines are followed, and physical improvements to the streetscape.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">The Crouch End group is now at the stage of preparing to make applications to Haringey Council for approval of the boundary of Crouch End Neighbourhood, and also of the Neighbourhood Forum itself by the end of August 2015. This must have 21 local residents or businesses signed up as members and reflecting the geographical and social diversity of the area.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">So far around 40 individuals have signed up as members, but the group is keen to attract more businesses, residents associations, amenity groups and other organisations to affiliate to the Neighbourhood Forum. (Affiliation can be achieved simply by returning e-mail the group and stating that an organisation wishes to affiliate).</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">As they prepare for the future the forum-in-waiting is keen to gather more local opinions and are asking those who live or trade in the proposed forum area <a href="https://crouchendforum.wordpress.com/crouch-end-neighbourhood-forum-initial-questionnaire/" target="_blank">complete a questionnaire</a> about likes, dislikes and priorities for Crouch End</span></p>
