Green Party activists measured levels of NO2 pollution in the borough in January and out of 40 readings, 40 were above the EU legal limit. All three readings around Harringay ward were alarmingly high.

Meet them on Friday, 22 July at 4 pm at Harringay Station, Wightman Road Entrance.

Jarelle Francis and other Green Party campaigners have been talking to residents on the doorstep over last few weeks about this. What is clear is this: there is a need for a solution that goes much wider than just closing one road to traffic.

‘Residents who I've spoken to on Wightman Road and the ladder roads generally prefer Wightman to remain closed permanently, unless a solution can be found to reduce the number of vehicles passing through. Closing Wightman Road to motor traffic makes it a safe and healthy road for pedestrians and cyclists,’ says Jarelle Francis.

He continues: ‘There are a lot of positive effects of closing the road: cyclists love the safe routes through Haringey, parents feel safe that their children can walk on Wightman and the ladder without danger, and noise pollution and air pollution have greatly reduced.’

‘But I have also listened to residents on different sides of the ward,' he adds. ‘Endymion Road and Green Lane residents have seen an increase in traffic on their roads, which already had severe congestion problems. We should find a fair compromise that benefits all residents and reduces overall through traffic, enabling people to choose alternative forms of transport.’

‘I’m delighted to be able support Jarelle Francis in his campaign to bring a fresh voice to Haringey Council,’ says Natalie Bennett, Leader of the Green Party of England and Wales.

Green Party councillors – even when there has been just one on a council - have been able to bring about real change. Green councillors persuaded Kirklees Council to set up a budget of £3 million to improve road safety and established a preferential parking scheme for low emission vehicles.

‘Similar schemes – especially if they are part of a wider review of how traffic is managed in Harringay – could make a real difference to local residents here,’ Natalie Bennett added.
Holy Week at St. Paul's, Harringaytag:harringayonline.com,2015-03-28:844301:Topic:7381372015-03-28T17:44:01.573ZBethany Burrow Athertonhttps://harringayonline.com/profile/BethanyBurrow

Harringay's wonderful painted St John the Baptist church on Wightman Road has just been awarded a £76,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund's Grants for Places of Worship scheme.

The Harringay church is just one of 152 of England's most important listed places of worship which are more secure, having benefitted from the £15million Lottery fund.

Designed in 1896-8 by James Brooks, the Wightman Road church is a Grade II listed building. Its interior was painted with murals over a period of twenty years by local artist by Eleftherios Foulidis.

The church previously received a grant of £159,000 in 2009 which enabled the repair of its roof. We all saw the wonderful new steeples emerge from that work. This year's grant will be used for the repair of high level roofing, rainwater goods and masonry.

Commenting on the grants, Carole Souter, HLF chief executive said: "Historic places of worship form prominent and much loved landmarks within our cities, towns and villages.

"They are unique buildings that bring local communities together for a variety of reasons from worship through to culture and leisure...and with these new grants we aim to ensure even more are secured for future generations to enjoy."

People seemed to be coming in and naturally drifting towards the kitchen to say hi and then easily falling in to conversation with one another. It feels like Moka has the potential to become a truly local hub (and we're promised top-notch wifi soon too).

Whilst I was there, I was lucky enough to meet HoLers James and Lindsay (pictured below, in the garden) and Osbawn. I also met Sam (yet to discover HoL) whose family has lived on Wightman for the past 40 years, between globe-trotting.

Below is a preview. Do pop along say hi to Kevin, his partner, his mum and the team and try a coffee. They were hard at work making a tart when I left. So I guess that should be ready about now. Mmmm......

(By the way, I learned today that as well as being the name borne by an illustrious Soho forbear and a style of coffee, Moka is also a place in Mauritiusclose to where Kevin's family is from).

Coming back from the station this afternoon, I noticed that work has started on the recently mooted deli and coffee shop next to La Vina on Wightman Road.

I stopped and introduced myself to Kevin who owns the business-to-be (but is leasing the premises from the 'corner shop' next door).

From a brief chat it sounds like good news all round. First timescale - Kevin hopes to be open in six or seven weeks once he's finished renovating the interrior.

First impressions of the interior look good. He's stripped the tongue and groove wood panelling from one wall to take it back to the brick. On that wall he's also taken out the lower part of two brick piers and inserted two metal columns which looks quite striking. On the opposite wall he's leaving the origial tongue and groove.

I also saw a pair of church doors waiting to be fitted. Those'll be used as the entrance way out to the garden which will be brought in to use as an outside seating space. It'll also be a growing space for herbs for use in cooking as well as for sale. (Sounding good?)

Born in Maurtius, Kevin's been a local for the last four years having moved in to his girlfriend's home in Burgoyne Road. Kevin has a background in physical fitness but blends this with a family passion for cooking. So as well as being a fitness trainer, he also runs a catering service working for a small number of corporate clients. The one client he named was one anyone would love to have on their list - which suggests that he must be doing something right.

In the cafe/deli the fare won't be 100% organic, but lots of it will be. Kevin's fearful of what it will do to his pricing if he were to go completely organic. He's planning to source 60-80% of his produce from his mother's property in Surrey - so fairly local as food miles go.

I asked if we could expect to see some yummy Mauritian food and he told me that apparently there will be some. He explained that Mauritian cooking is 'the original fusion food', being a mix between South Indian and French cuisines.

Sounding even better?

I also asked if he might think about offering some home cooked ready-meals that people could pick up on their way home from the station. Apparently this is on the cards too as it will help him to be productive during the quieter late afternoon period. But he's also thinking about wooing local mums or other groups during that period. What can he do to woo you?

Just before I left to let him get on with the work of creating what might be called Moka, Kevin also mentioned his plans to reserve some counter space for other local food producers. Apparently he's already in discussion with a couple of local cake bakers!

It all sounds very exciting to me. It's wonderful to see work started and I very much look forward to being one of Moka's first customers!
Work started on Hornsey Train depot (Hampden)?tag:harringayonline.com,2011-04-15:844301:Topic:2314542011-04-15T16:40:31.374ZJohn Dhttps://harringayonline.com/profile/JohnD
