Event Description

FOR NOVEMBER WE HAVE FEATURES WRITING AND LIFE WRITING WORKSHOPS.

Discover or develop the writer in you! We run workshops on fiction, creative-non fiction, journalism and poetry. You can book onto a morning or an afternoon course (£45 for 3 sessions) or make an exciting full day of writing by booking onto both (£90 for 6 sessions). Cost includes delicious Kabaret refreshments during a well earned break in each session each week.

JOURNALISM: FEATURES WRITING

5th, 12th, 19th November, 10am-12.30pm, with Giovanna Iozzi

This course covers all areas of journalistic features writing: finding a compelling story with a strong human-interest angle, gathering research materials, conducting interviews and then writing clear prose that informs and interests your reader. Tips on research, interview techniques, writing style, fact corroboration and legal issues will be given. Students will be encouraged to finish the course with a completed feature to pitch to editors both in print and online.

“Giovanna is an encouraging teacher who has created a supportive environment in which to develop our writing skills in a very short space of time.” Annie, workshop student

LIFE WRITING IN FICTION

5th, 12th, 19th November, 1.30pm-4pm, with Rebecca Swirsky

Together through these three workshops we will consider how to turn life experience into compelling narrative without becoming too confessional, and the ethics of writing about those we know. Is there ever separation between fact and fiction? How real is memoir? By considering different narrative points of view using texts from contemporary fiction writers, we will begin several life-writing pieces, using prompts that may then be added to our writing ‘tool kit’.

“Rebecca was extremely positive and encouraging when it came to sharing/commenting on my writing.” Wendy, workshop student
