SUMMARY:Akrodha: A zerOclassikal EXTRAPOLATE World Premiere
DESCRIPTION:zerOclassikal and Collage Arts present the world premiere
of AKRODHA, a piece for bansuri (bamboo flute) and dilruba (bowed sita
 r) composed by Kiran Sodhi-Kalsi-Ghatoure, that blends analog and digi
tal sounds to create an otherworldly experience. Akrodha (अक्र
 ोध)—meaning \"freedom from anger\"—draws inspiration from Kira
n’s experiences with EMDR therapy and non-Western healing practices.
This composition unfolds in a dream-like landscape of layered, loopin
g soundscapes, exploring the tension between conflicting multiplicity
and harmonious unity — both within ourselves and in communication wi
th those around us. As the music progresses, heavy emotions are uneart
hed and transformed, leading the overall mood to lightness and liberat
ion. Kiran SKG will be performing with bansuri (bamboo flute), dilruba
(bowed sitar) and a digital loop station, accompanied by multi-instru
mentalist Joe Steele who will be performing with synth keyboard, melod
ica and western concert flute. A zerOclassikal EXTRAPOLATE commission.
EXTRAPOLATE is new work that originates from the South Asian Classica
l structure and progresses it further in ways that sometimes challenge
s its conventional structure or enhances it beyond present perceptions
. Whether it explores tonal material or redefines the use of taal or m
erely steps out of conventions, EXTRAPOLATE will seek to listen to Sou
th Asian Classical music in a way it had never been thought of before.
The second half: FREE FLOW CLASSIKAL will feature renowned composer J
onathan Mayer on sitar, accompanied by Karamel’s jazz regulars Paul
Clarvis on tabla, John Parricelli on guitar and Jazz trumpeter Henry L
owther. Free Flow Classikal is a new border dwelling concept that expl
ores free improvisation across music genres perspective-ed from south
Asian classical form - in development at Karamel, home of zerOclassika
