Anyone to recommend for gardening advice for beginners?

We're about to start a garden from scratch -- at the moment it's an overgrown mess, that may or may not have access to water... We're in favour of something good for conservation and with a natural rather than neat feel... trying to work out where to begin. Any suggestions appreciated!
