I have just returned from holiday and found that the apple season is upon us. About 50 kg of windfalls have already been gathered mainly from under my Bramley and I shall have to start pressing apple juice tomorrow (Friday) - the first batch will probably be fairly tart. The tree shed a further 7kg overnight and the remaining crop seems undiminished. It may not match the record 400kg of 2010 but it may be close.
Three kinds of dessert apples in smaller quantities are also ripe enough to eat. Two kinds of dessert pears on small trees are close but the cooking pears (giant tree) don't usually drop till November.
If anyone would like to try a bit of pressing, let me know. If anyone wants to bring children to have a look, let me know which day would suit. The next pressing days will probably be 20th morning, 22nd afternoon and 25th morning.

Dick. Would love to come along, but none of those dates work. Let me know if you do any other dates.
Dear Dick,
Are you still picking and juicing tomorrow and at what time? We would love to cme and help - it was loads of fun last year. Let me know what time.
Thanks,
Sonya, Andrew and Isobel and Eilidh
I did a load (35kg) yesterday so the press will be ready by tomorrow morning. However, I shall not have enough windfalls by then to make a full load so I shall have to delay a day or two (unless of course you have some fruit yourself). Tomorrow afternoon, I was thinking of going down to Finsbury Park for the New River centenary celebrations.
Dear Dick, Are you still picking and pressing? Let us know and we can come and help.
Sonya and Andrew
Sorry to have delayed replying Sonya.
Yes, I am still pressing. We pressed Trudy's grapes last Tuesday and my fourth load of apples on Wednesday. Then a friend fitted in a load of his own which will be cleared later today. There are now enough windfalls for a fifth load. I plan to do it tomorrow afternoon starting about 3pm. If that would be convenient, by all means come or let me know when would be better. This week, windfalls have been accumulating at about 10kg per day so I shall have to do another load by the weekend if not before. Two trees are still laden so I expect to be at it for some time yet.
I have just finished pressing the sixth batch apples and have accumulated 96 bottles of pasteurised juice. I am planning to take some fresh juice to the Apple day at Hornsey Vale community centre on Saturday afternoon so I shall need to do a further pressing on Friday this week.
Dick. If you have had enough of pressing let me know, I am going to borrow Gemma's press after the apple day to press some fruity I have collected on the following Sunday (20th) when we have our Play Street event here on Pemberton (2-5pm). I am hoping to get the kids to press some fruit and share the juice.
So, if you have any spare fruit you have had enough of let me know. No worries if you still have need of it!
Hopefully see you on Saturday.
