Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

On my nightly slug patrol this evening I just couldn't do my usual trick of cutting the little B******s in half to feed the blackbirds.  Why?......

I came across this beauty which measures in at least 5 inches.  Its markings really caught my eye and I actually felt guilty for even thinking about ending its life.  So apologies to all you fellow gardeners for letting the side down, as tonight, I saved a life but destroyed a few more plants.

I try not to cause more pain than the millisecond of a good stomp - salt must be agony, it dissolves the skin. I have read of collecting them all into a bag and popping in the freezer - thus a slow slide into unconsciousness and death, as they are cold-blooded. If they have consciousness?  Then any French visitors can thaw them for lunch.

MATT NO!

My guilt is not catholic thank goddess - it's the knowledge that we are all bonded in our guardianship of the earth, I'm hard pressed to find my exact connection with these little friends though. Does anyone know what slugs are for?

My Mum always said, when cutting them in half with scissors, that she was preparing supper for the Hedehogs and blackbirds.

Slugs I can kill - but I can't seem to kill snails as they have are much nicer. What do other people do to snails?

Stomp. It's better if you're wearing shoes.

Catapault!  But mostly forgive them because they look cute.

Yes I am developing my slug and snail hurling techniques, fortunately I am next to the railway so not into anothers garden! Know that they will find their way back eventually but hope it will take a long time! I love having the railway at the bottom of the garden as it gives a sense of wildness and lots of space for wildlife however the down side is that anything I try and grow is usually decimated by the abundance of creatures who love to eat my veggies and love the wildness as much as I do! From the smallest like the black, green fly to the biggest, the foxes.....Feeling overpowered by them all at the moment.... even with the hand held hoover at the ready to clear them up.... Perhaps I might try and consider to start cutting the slugs in half if it helps the birds but the thought of that crunch as I step on a snail leaves me squirming just can't do it:(

Its a bugger when the foxes clog up the hoover as well.......

I catapult my snails to the bottom of the garden where its a bit woodlandy with lots of snail resistant ferns.  Yes they do meander back, but hey I am sure they are up for the challenge.

Just to clarify Gilly, the hand held hoover is for what?? the slugs ??  Glad you clarified about the foxes I've a image of their brush being the last bit to go down.

Sam the hand held hoover is for hoovering up the black, green and white fly and it really works, a great tip I got of the net.

OMG- this is a nightmare for me, dont see slugs but loads of snails and dont know what to do with them, cant bring myself to jump and them, if its only the odd one, I sling them into.... nearby, not alwys a great idea, or else they go out with my garden waste bag- i feel like murderer, anyone any ideas, or maybe I  should just let them continue to munch through my plants
