suggestion for bush to grow in south facing front garden

Hi all

I would like some recommendations of what to grow in my front garden by the front wall, which is south facing and gets absolutely baking in summer! I would ideally like some sort of rose or something with nice flowers, which will grow to about a meter high or just over. Also it needs to do ok in clay soil... Any suggestions?

Thank you in advance.

Hi Sally

You've probably taken the plunge by now but - in case you haven't - one thing that has worked for me has been perennial wallflower (Erysimum) - see here. I have it in a raised bed in a south facing garden that gets baked (hard to believe it now) and it has thrived for 3 years. It had flowers in November and some more in February, but it doesn't meet your height criteria (about 50 cm tall). You could mix it with Verbena Bon .... which sows itself around quite happily and would give you a bit more height.

I'm no expert on roses, but my neighbour has some which are thriving.

Anyone else with any bright ideas? What works for others?

Ah thanks for this. Well I will give your suggestions a go as the pics look lovely!

I have bought a couple of roses but they will probably take a while to get to a decent hight. I hope they do ok because I always admire others' roses in their front garden.

We can't afford to have a decent wall built at the front of the house so I'm hoping that the plants will make it look a bit prettier...
