In 1869 when Harringay was still open land the Hornsey Local Board commissioned the building of a new sewer, the Hornsey Outfall Sewer. As the area was built up, nothing could be built over the sewer. So, its line can be traced today by the line of the Harringay Passage. The sewer had to be upgraded at the start of the 20th Century to cope with the additional demand. It is this work that is shown in the picture above.
