Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Saw this really interesting article yesterday about how the abandoned “Noho Square” development could be turned into allotments where residents grow fruit and vegetables in large, portable “grow bags”.

Hi alison. Do you have any idea why they named it Noho square ?
NoHo comes from Manhattan, New York after SoHo which means South of Houston (Street). There are some great community gardens around NoHo.
Then the real estate wags came up with NoHo - North of Houston (street).
Before both of these was TriBeCa (like the film festival) which is Tringle Below Canal Street. The real estate folks are always trying to pitch new angles on areas to make them sound trendy and therefore more sellable. The latest is DUMBO Down Underneath Manhattan Bridge Overpass, (Brooklyn).
Of course there's a big hoo hah about what to call harringay gardens. They seem to want us to think it's like hampstead garden suburbs. Even though there is a street called harringay gardens. saphireBlue lives there (can i say that ?) anyway i like your gardening group and i'm looking forward to this growing season.
Hey James. No idea why its Noho - just trendy sounding I guess in terms of property, and echoes Soho to the south. (and has that trendy NYC sound as well).

That area already has a name (Fitzrovia, more here) - perhaps that is seen to sound too old-fashioned? Personally I'd go for Fitzrovia over Noho anytime!

It is funny, the name thing. You used to see references to Harringay village which made me laugh so much I cried.
I see what they are getting at.
fitzrovia is directly north of soho via oxford street.
it's still a bit of a stretch to connect soho and 'north of soho' to come up with noho.
logically they should have considered NoSoho = North Of Soho
But that may confuse japanese tourists he he
